About Calathea Makoyana

The Calathea Makoyana has sometimes been called the 'peacock plant' has impressive dark green, red and bright white marbled variegation on its small shrubby leaves that would be a perfectly unique accessory for any modern-design scheme. This simple display has the right amount of contrasting colour to catch the eye and never get old. Standing on slightly blushing, thick stems this plant is a great look for a dining room or formal area.

How to grow a Calathea
Calathea plants love greenhouse-like conditions with plenty of airflow. You should set your plant near a window where it will receive bright, but indirect sunlight. Never put your plant in direct sunlight or you risk scorching the leaves. If light levels are too low the plant will go dormant and stop growing

What soil should I plant my Calathea in?
Calathea prefers acidic soil. Using a peat-based potting mix with a pH of 55 to 60 is a great option, but you can also mix two parts sphagnum to one part loamy soil for a more homemade option. Make sure you keep the soil well-draining so you don't overwater your plant.

How do you water a Calathea?
Water frequently during the spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Do not let water sit on the leaves or they may develop fungal problems. If the leaves begin to turn yellow the leaves will begin turning yellow. Reduce the frequency of watering in the winter, this allows the plant to go dormant and be ready for increased growth come the spring.

Right Packaging

As an online plant store, we recognise the need to protect the environment and have thought very carefully about the packaging we use and where we buy it from to make sure your plants turn up in good condition with the least impact on the environment.

When it comes to packaging, our philosophy takes the following into account:

Sustainability - all of the packaging we used can be fully reused, recycled or composted. And, in the unfortunate event that it does make its way to landfill, it will biodegrade, leaving nothing but humus behind.

The right packaging for the job - we want our plants to arrive in perfect condition so we have designed packaging that holds your plants safely and securely inside the box, meaning they turn up in great condition.

What's our packaging made from?

Our outer packaging is made from corrugated cardboard. This cardboard can withstand the weight of your plants and is not susceptible to moisture so will remain strong and stable until your plants are delivered and you’re ready to unpack them. Not only that, it will keep your plants safe and undamaged in transit.

As well as being perfect for keeping your plants safe, corrugated cardboard is easy to recycle and is in keeping with our commitment to ensure we use the more environmentally friendly packaging as possible.

Packaging sustainability

We have chosen to partner with a packaging supplier that has the same environmental values as us. All packaging uses 85% recycled material and is 100% recyclable and compostable. This commitment to the environment is backed up by a Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation and ISO 14001 accreditation for their environmental management system.
