25 - 35cm Chlorophytum Comosum Spider House Plant 12cm Pot
The Spider Plant is a popular houseplant and is known for its long, arching leaves that are green with white stripes. Its common name derives from the plant's "spiderettes," which are baby plants that dangle from the mother plant much like spiders on a web. These spiderettes can touch the ground and root, or they can be potted up as new plants. Spider Plants are also well-known for their air-purifying qualities.
Care Guide for Spider Plant:
-
Light: Spider Plants prefer bright, indirect light, but they can tolerate semi-shade and some direct sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, causing them to turn brown.
-
Watering: Water moderately, letting the top inch of the soil dry out between waterings. Spider Plants prefer to dry out a bit between waterings, so it's essential not to overwater.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A general-purpose potting soil or one formulated for houseplants will work.
-
Temperature: They thrive in temperatures between 60°F and 75°F (15°C-24°C) and can tolerate a cooler environment, down to about 50°F (10°C).
-
Humidity: Spider Plants aren't very picky about humidity. They can tolerate average home humidity but do well with a bit more. If the tips of the leaves become brown, it may be an indicator that the humidity is too low.
-
Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed the plant once a month with a balanced liquid fertilizer. In the dormant season (fall and winter), there's no need to fertilize.
-
Repotting: Repot when the plant becomes root-bound or the pot becomes crowded. Typically, this is every couple of years.
-
Pruning: Trim off brown tips or whole leaves to keep the plant looking its best. You can also remove the spiderettes if you feel they're making the plant look too busy, or you can pot them to create new plants.
-
Pests: They can be prone to spider mites, especially in dry indoor conditions. Regularly check and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
-
Toxicity: Spider Plants are considered non-toxic to humans but can be mildly harmful to pets if ingested, causing digestive upset.
Spider Plants are resilient and forgiving, making them excellent for beginner plant enthusiasts. They're also great for those who might occasionally forget to water, as they can handle a bit of neglect. Proper care will reward you with a lush, vibrant plant and plenty of baby spiderettes!
