Zamioculcas zamifolia, also known as the ZZ plant, is a tropical plant native to eastern Africa that is popular as a houseplant due to its attractive, glossy foliage and ease of care. Here are some tips on caring for a ZZ plant:

  1. Light: ZZ plants do best in bright to moderate indirect light. They can tolerate low light, but will grow more slowly and may not produce as many leaves.

  2. Water: ZZ plants are drought-tolerant and can go long periods without water. Water only when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so be careful not to let the soil stay wet for extended periods.

  3. Soil: Use well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A mixture of potting soil, perlite, and peat moss works well for most ZZ plants.

  4. Temperature: ZZ plants prefer temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C) and can tolerate temperatures as low as 45°F (7°C) and as high as 95°F (35°C).

  5. Humidity: ZZ plants do not require high humidity and can tolerate a wide range of humidity levels.

  6. Fertilizer: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.

  7. Propagation: ZZ plants can be propagated by dividing the root ball into smaller sections and potting them separately. This is best done in the spring or summer.

  8. Pruning: ZZ plants do not require regular pruning, but you can remove any yellow or damaged leaves as needed.

  9. Pests: ZZ plants are generally resistant to pests, but can occasionally be affected by spider mites, mealybugs, or scale insects. If you notice signs of an infestation, treat the plant with an insecticidal soap or neem oil.
