Care Guide
Lighting: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sunlight but avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday sun to prevent leaf scorch. An east or west-facing window is ideal.
Watering: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. Over-watering can lead to root rot, so ensure the potting mix is well-draining and the pot has drainage holes. Water less frequently during the winter months.
Humidity: Benefits from high humidity, typical of its tropical origin. Aim for humidity levels above 60%. You can increase humidity around the plant through misting, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water.
Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 29°C (65°F to 85°F). Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops, especially in winter.
Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix is crucial. An orchid mix or a blend containing perlite, bark, and coco coir can provide the necessary drainage and aeration.
Feeding: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in autumn and withhold fertilizer during winter.
Repotting: Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound, so repotting every 2-3 years or when the plant has clearly outgrown its pot is sufficient. Spring is the best time for repotting.
Pest and Disease Management: Be vigilant for pests such as mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Prevent root rot and fungal diseases by avoiding over-watering and ensuring good air circulation around the plant.
