Hoya Nicholsoniae is a captivating and somewhat rare species within the Hoya genus, known for its attractive foliage and stunning floral displays. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, this plant exhibits elongated, lance-shaped leaves that are dark green in colour, sometimes with lighter venation or speckles. The leaves can have a slightly wavy edge, adding to the plant's visual interest. Hoya Nicholsoniae is particularly admired for its clusters of star-shaped flowers, which are typically a creamy white with a pink or red center, exuding a pleasant fragrance. These flowers are borne in umbels and can appear throughout the warmer months, given the right conditions. Like many Hoyas, Nicholsoniae is a climbing or trailing vine, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or trellises where its growth habit and floral displays can be fully appreciated.

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may reduce flowering. A spot near an east or west-facing window is ideal.

Water: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Hoyas prefer not to be overwatered and have semi-succulent leaves that store water, making them somewhat drought-tolerant. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Humidity: Enjoys high humidity but is quite adaptable and can thrive in average household humidity levels. If the air is very dry, consider using a pebble tray or a humidifier to increase humidity around the plant.

Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 18°C to 29°C (65°F to 85°F). Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures dropping below 15°C (59°F) for extended periods.

Feeding: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in the autumn and winter.

Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix designed for succulents or orchids (containing perlite, orchid bark, and peat moss) works well for Hoyas, providing adequate drainage and air circulation around the roots.

Repotting: Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound and only need repotting every 2-3 years or when the pot is clearly too small. When repotting, choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one.

Pruning: Prune as needed to control growth or remove any dead or damaged foliage. Avoid removing the peduncles (flower stalks), as Hoyas will rebloom from the same spot in future years.

Pests and Problems: Watch for pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Overwatering is the most common issue, leading to root rot, so ensure the plant is not sitting in soggy soil.

Propagation: Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Place cuttings in water or a moist potting mix, ensuring at least one node (where leaves emerge) is submerged or buried. Roots should develop within a few weeks.
