Product Overview

About Sturon Round Seed Onions

The most common onion you will find in the supermarket, the Sturon produces large, round straw-coloured bulbs. The large yields from this plant make it ideal for avid home cooks and their mild taste will go well with any dish. These are reliable and consistent vegetables that are ideal for the amateur or expert.

How to grow onions at home

Onions need a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting improve the soil by digging in some compost or well-rotted manure. From mid-March to mid-April or in September plant your onion sets 5-10 cm (2-4”) apart in rows that are spaces 25-30cm (10-12”) from each other. or in September. Gently push the sets into the prepared soil with the tip just showing, firm the soil around them and water well. Keep watering regularly to keep the soil moist, but beyond that and some basic weeding they can be left to themselves.

How to harvest homegrown onions

Onions are ready to harvest once the foliage starts to turn yellow and topple over. For spring-planted onions this will be from late summer to early autumn, and for September-planted, from July. Before the foliage dies completely, lift the onion from the ground and place in a well-ventilated space for about two weeks to ripen. Once ripe, store the bulbs in a dry space until needed.

Right Packaging

As an online plant store, we recognise the need to protect the environment and have thought very carefully about the packaging we use and where we buy it from to make sure your plants turn up in good condition with the least impact on the environment.

When it comes to packaging, our philosophy takes the following into account:

Sustainability - all of the packaging we used can be fully reused, recycled or composted. And, in the unfortunate event that it does make its way to landfill, it will biodegrade, leaving nothing but humus behind.

The right packaging for the job - we want our plants to arrive in perfect condition so we have designed packaging that holds your plants safely and securely inside the box, meaning they turn up in great condition.

What's our packaging made from?

Our outer packaging is made from corrugated cardboard. This cardboard can withstand the weight of your plants and is not susceptible to moisture so will remain strong and stable until your plants are delivered and you’re ready to unpack them. Not only that, it will keep your plants safe and undamaged in transit.

As well as being perfect for keeping your plants safe, corrugated cardboard is easy to recycle and is in keeping with our commitment to ensure we use the more environmentally friendly packaging as possible.

Packaging sustainability

We have chosen to partner with a packaging supplier that has the same environmental values as us. All packaging uses 85% recycled material and is 100% recyclable and compostable. This commitment to the environment is backed up by a Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation and ISO 14001 accreditation for their environmental management system.
