Hoya carnosa ‘Krimson Queen Splash’ is a striking and unique cultivar of the Hoya carnosa family. Its leaves are thick, waxy, and adorned with variegated edges in creamy white or pale pink, which contrast beautifully with the deep green centres. The “splash” aspect refers to the silver speckles or mottled patterns scattered across the green portion of the leaves, adding an extra layer of visual interest.

This trailing or climbing vine is perfect for hanging baskets or trellises, creating an elegant cascade of foliage. When mature and given proper care, it produces star-shaped flowers in soft pink hues with a darker centre, exuding a pleasant fragrance.

Care Guide for Hoya Carnosa ‘Krimson Queen Splash’

1. Light

  • Ideal Conditions: Bright, indirect light is essential to maintain the vibrant variegation and silver splashes.
  • Tolerances: Can adapt to moderate light but may lose variegation and slow growth in low light.
  • Avoid: Prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate white or pink edges.

2. Watering

  • Frequency: Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in cooler months.
  • Method: Use the soak-and-drain method—water thoroughly, then allow excess to drain away completely.
  • Avoid: Overwatering, as it can cause root rot.

3. Humidity

  • Ideal Levels: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50% or higher).
  • Enhancements: Place near a humidifier, or group with other plants to boost local humidity.

4. Temperature

  • Optimal Range: 18–24°C (65–75°F).
  • Avoid: Exposure to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) or cold drafts.

5. Soil

  • Type: A well-draining and airy mix is crucial.
  • Best Mix: Combine standard potting soil with orchid bark and perlite or pumice for optimal aeration and drainage.

6. Fertiliser

  • Schedule: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertiliser.
  • Avoid: Over-fertilising, especially during the dormant winter months.

7. Pruning

  • Purpose: Remove dead or damaged leaves to promote healthy growth.
  • Caution: Do not prune flower peduncles, as the plant will rebloom from these points.

8. Repotting

  • Frequency: Every 2–3 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound.
  • Best Time: Spring, as it prepares for new growth.

9. Propagation

  • Method: Propagate via stem cuttings.
    • Cut a stem with at least 2–3 nodes.
    • Root in water or a mix of perlite and sphagnum moss for the best results.

10. Common Issues

  • Fading Variegation: Caused by insufficient light; move to a brighter location.
  • Yellowing Leaves: Often due to overwatering.
  • Pests: Keep an eye out for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Special Tips

  • Encourage flowering by providing bright light and keeping the plant slightly root-bound.
  • Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even light exposure and symmetrical growth.
  • Avoid using overly strong fertilisers, as they can damage the delicate variegation.
