15 - 25cm Philodendron Rojo Congo House Plant 12cm Pot
The Philodendron 'Rojo Congo' is a non-vining, tropical plant known for its lush, large, dark green leaves and rich, red stems. Unlike many Philodendron species, the Rojo Congo does not have split leaves but maintains a whole leaf throughout its life. The new leaves emerge a deep, shiny red and gradually mature to a deep green, while the leaf petioles (stems) retain their red hue, giving the plant its name "Rojo" (meaning "red" in Spanish).
Care Guide for Philodendron 'Rojo Congo':
-
Light: It thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause the leaves to bleach, while too little light can lead to leggy growth.
-
Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of the soil are dry. Overwatering or letting the plant sit in water can cause root rot.
-
Soil: A well-draining potting mix is essential. You can use a standard houseplant mix with added perlite for better drainage.
-
Temperature: Rojo Congo prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C-27°C). It's not frost-tolerant and should be kept away from drafts or sudden temperature changes.
-
Humidity: While it can tolerate average indoor humidity, it will thrive in higher humidity levels. If your home's air is dry, consider placing a humidifier nearby or using a pebble tray filled with water to boost humidity around the plant.
-
Fertilization: Feed your Rojo Congo every 6-8 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer, diluted to half the recommended strength.
-
Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its current container.
-
Pruning: This plant generally doesn't require a lot of pruning. However, you can remove yellow or damaged leaves to maintain its appearance and health.
-
Pests: Regularly inspect for common pests such as aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. If detected, treat promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
-
Toxicity: The Rojo Congo, like many Philodendron species, is toxic when ingested. Ensure it's placed out of reach from pets and young children.
Remember, the key to a healthy Philodendron 'Rojo Congo' is paying attention to its needs and adjusting care accordingly. With proper care, it can be a vibrant and attractive addition to any indoor plant collection.
