Sansevieria ‘Moonshine’ is a stunning cultivar known for its sleek, upright, silvery-green leaves with a faint, misty sheen. Unlike the darker green of traditional snake plants, ‘Moonshine’ offers a light, almost ethereal look, making it a popular choice for modern, minimalist, and Scandinavian-inspired spaces.

This variety forms an upright rosette of broad, sword-shaped leaves with soft dark green margins and subtle vertical striations. Tough and adaptable like its relatives, Sansevieria ‘Moonshine’ is low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and highly effective at purifying indoor air.

Care Guide for Sansevieria ‘Moonshine’

Light

Moonshine thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps preserve its pale, silvery colour. It will tolerate low light, but the leaf colour may deepen to a more standard green over time. Avoid prolonged harsh sun, which can bleach or scorch the foliage.

💡 Place it near a north- or east-facing window for the best balance of light and colour.

Watering

Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess to drain away. In warm seasons, watering every 2–3 weeks is typical; in winter, it may need water as infrequently as once a month.

🚫 Avoid overwatering at all costs – this is the most common cause of root rot.

Humidity

Sansevieria ‘Moonshine’ is not fussy about humidity. It thrives in average household humidity and requires no misting, making it suitable for any room, including bedrooms and offices.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures are 16–30°C. Protect from cold air and do not expose to temperatures below 10°C. Sudden temperature changes may stress the plant.

Soil

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, or houseplant compost mixed with perlite or sand. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent standing water at the roots.

Feeding

Feed lightly with a cactus or general-purpose houseplant fertiliser once every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer. Avoid feeding in winter when growth slows.

Propagation

  • Division: The most reliable method

  • Leaf cuttings: Possible, but new growth may lose the distinctive silvery colouring and revert to green

Common Problems

  • Yellow, mushy leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage

  • Dull green foliage: Low light or ageing growth

  • Brown tips or edges: Dry air, cold drafts, or irregular watering

  • Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering

Styling Tips

  • Perfect for clean, modern spaces with a neutral or monochrome palette

  • Striking in white or grey ceramic planters

  • Ideal for offices, shelves, and bedside tables due to its compact upright growth
