Description: Tradescantia Tricolour, also known as Wandering Jew or Inch Plant, is a stunning cultivar characterised by its vibrant leaves adorned with three primary colours: green, white, and shades of pink. The variegated foliage is slender and pointed, with pink tones often appearing more vivid in young or well-lit leaves. Like other Tradescantia varieties, it has a trailing growth habit, making it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or cascading arrangements.

Tradescantia Tricolour is prized for its fast growth, ease of care, and ability to thrive in a variety of indoor environments, adding a splash of colour to any plant collection.

Care Guide

1. Light Requirements

  • Preferred: Bright, indirect sunlight to maintain the vibrant pink and white variegation.
  • Tolerates: Medium light, though colours may fade slightly.
  • Avoid: Direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves, and very low light, which may result in leggy growth.

2. Watering

  • Frequency: Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of soil is dry.
  • Method: Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then allow the soil to dry before watering again.
  • Caution: Overwatering can cause root rot; ensure the pot has good drainage.

3. Humidity

  • Thrives in moderate to high humidity.
  • In dry conditions, increase humidity by misting the plant, using a pebble tray, or placing it near a humidifier.
  • Avoid placing near heat sources or cold drafts.

4. Temperature

  • Ideal range: 18–25°C (65–77°F).
  • Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F), as Tradescantia Tricolour is sensitive to cold.

5. Soil

  • Prefers a well-draining potting mix.
  • A general-purpose houseplant mix with added perlite or coarse sand is ideal.

6. Fertilising

  • Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Reduce feeding in autumn and stop during winter when growth slows.

7. Pruning

  • Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and prevents legginess.
  • Pinch back long stems to promote branching.
  • Remove any yellow, damaged, or dead leaves to keep the plant healthy.

8. Propagation

  • Easily propagated through stem cuttings.
  • Cut just below a node and remove the lower leaves.
  • Place the cutting in water or moist potting soil. Roots will develop within 1–2 weeks in favourable conditions.

9. Pests

  • Common pests include spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids.
  • Check regularly for pests and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

10. Common Problems

  • Fading Colours: Insufficient light is the primary cause. Move to a brighter spot with indirect sunlight.
  • Leggy Growth: This often occurs in low light. Trim back stems and improve lighting conditions.
  • Yellowing Leaves: May indicate overwatering. Let the soil dry out between waterings.

11. Repotting

  • Repot every 1–2 years or when the plant outgrows its pot.
  • Use a pot that is one size larger and ensure it has adequate drainage holes.

Styling Tips

  • Use Tradescantia Tricolour as a colourful trailing plant in hanging baskets or on shelves.
  • Pair it with plants with contrasting shapes or darker foliage to highlight its pastel hues.
  • Incorporate it into mixed arrangements for a vibrant and textured look.

With proper care, Tradescantia Tricolour will flourish and add a splash of its unique tricoloured beauty to your home or garden!
