🌺 Anthurium Andraeanum (Red Anthurium)

The Red Anthurium, also known as the Flamingo Flower, Painter’s Palette, or simply Anthurium, is an eye-catching tropical plant admired for its striking, long-lasting red spathes and glossy, heart-shaped leaves. Native to the rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador, Anthurium andraeanum is a member of the arum family (Araceae), and has become a popular ornamental houseplant worldwide for its elegant, exotic appearance and extended blooming period.

Despite common belief, the "flower" is not actually the bright red part — the red, waxy, heart-shaped structure is a spath (a modified leaf), which surrounds a yellow or cream-coloured spadix, the true flowering structure. These floral displays can last up to 8 weeks and often appear year-round under the right conditions, making the plant a favourite for anyone seeking a vibrant, continuous pop of colour indoors.

The foliage of the Anthurium is equally beautiful — broad, deep green, and leathery, forming a lush base that contrasts dramatically with the bold red spathes. Compact and upright in growth, the Red Anthurium makes an excellent centrepiece on tables or shelves, or as part of a tropical-themed plant arrangement.

🪴 Red Anthurium Care Guide

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage flowering and vibrant colour.

  • Tolerates medium light, but blooms may be less frequent or smaller.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch leaves and cause faded flowers.

💧 Watering

  • Water when the top 2–4 cm of soil feels dry.

  • Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy — Anthuriums are sensitive to overwatering and prone to root rot.

  • In winter, allow the soil to dry out a bit more between waterings.

  • Use room-temperature water and avoid wetting the leaves excessively.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature range: 18–26°C.

  • Keep away from draughts, air vents, and cold windows.

  • Prefers high humidity (60–80%) — a key factor for healthy flowering.

    • Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting (avoiding the flowers).

    • Bathrooms or kitchens with filtered light can be ideal locations.

🌱 Soil

  • Requires a well-draining, airy mix that retains moisture but allows roots to breathe.

  • A mix of orchid bark, coco coir, perlite, and peat-free compost is ideal.

  • Avoid dense or heavy potting soils that hold too much water.

🔁 Feeding

  • Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn).

  • Use a high-phosphorus liquid fertiliser or a balanced houseplant feed diluted to half strength.

  • Avoid overfeeding — too much fertiliser can lead to salt buildup and leaf burn.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Remove faded flowers and any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base with clean scissors.

  • Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to maintain shine and photosynthesis.

  • Rotate the plant periodically to ensure even growth on all sides.

🌿 Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years, ideally in spring.

  • Choose a pot that is 2–3 cm wider than the current one, with proper drainage holes.

  • Anthuriums prefer being slightly root-bound, so only repot when necessary.

🌱 Propagation

  • Best propagated by division during repotting. Separate offshoots with roots attached.

  • Can also be grown from cuttings, though this is slower and more delicate.

🐾 Pet Safety

  • Toxic if ingested by pets or humans due to calcium oxalate crystals.

  • Can cause irritation, swelling, or stomach upset. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
