Hoya wayetii is a unique and attractive Hoya species with elongated, lance-shaped leaves that often display prominent veining and sometimes have red to burgundy edges. This Hoya, like many in its genus, produces lovely waxy blooms. Here's how to care for Hoya Wayetii:

Description:

  • Leaves: Elongated, lance-shaped, with a deep green color. The leaves often have visible veins and can display red to burgundy edges when exposed to bright light.

  • Flowers: Typical Hoya flowers, which are star-shaped and waxy, forming in clusters. They can be white or pink with a darker center.

Care Guide:

  1. Light: Hoya wayetii prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sunlight, but too much direct sun can scorch its leaves. The reddish leaf margins are more pronounced when the plant receives ample light.

  2. Water: Wait until the top inch or so of the soil is dry before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's essential to use well-draining soil. Reduce watering frequency during the dormant winter months.

  3. Humidity: Hoya wayetii enjoys higher humidity but will tolerate average household humidity. You can increase humidity through misting, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a tray filled with pebbles and water.

  4. Temperature: It prefers temperatures between 60°F (15°C) and 85°F (29°C). Ensure it's not exposed to temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

  5. Soil: A fast-draining potting mix is ideal. Consider a mix of regular potting soil with added perlite, orchid bark, or even some cactus mix.

  6. Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize the plant with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 3-4 weeks. In the dormant season (usually winter), you can reduce or skip fertilization.

  7. Pruning: Pruning isn't strictly necessary unless you want to shape the plant or encourage a bushier growth habit. Remember that Hoya blooms on old growth, so avoid cutting off the peduncles (flowering spurs) if you want repeated blooms.

  8. Propagation: Stem cuttings are the most common method for propagation. Take a cutting with a couple of nodes, allow it to air dry for a day, and then place it in water or a well-draining potting mix to root.

  9. Pests: Keep an eye out for common pests like aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. Treat any infestations promptly using insecticidal soap, neem oil, or other appropriate treatments.

Regular observation and adjusting care as needed will help ensure the health and vitality of your Hoya wayetii. Like all plants, individual needs can vary based on the environment and conditions in your specific home or growing area.
