The Philodendron lupinum is an appealing tropical houseplant notable for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves. It's a climbing variety, making it an excellent candidate for a moss pole setup.

Description

Philodendron lupinum boasts charming, heart-shaped, deep green leaves with distinct, visible veins. The leaf texture is unique and velvety, giving it an elegant look. As it climbs and matures, its leaf size can increase dramatically, becoming more spectacular over time.

Care Guide for Philodendron Lupinum on a Moss Pole

  1. Light: Philodendron lupinum does well in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, whereas insufficient light may slow down its growth and lessen leaf coloration.

  2. Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Be careful to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Keeping the moss pole moist will also provide necessary humidity and promote aerial root growth.

  3. Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 55°F as it could cause damage.

  4. Humidity: This plant appreciates high humidity. Maintaining a damp moss pole helps to create a microclimate of higher humidity around the plant.

  5. Soil: A well-draining potting mix is critical. A mix of peat moss or coco coir with perlite or orchid bark works well.

  6. Fertilizer: Fertilize every month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. No need to fertilize in the winter.

  7. Pruning: Pruning can be done to manage the size and shape of the plant. Make sure to cut just above a leaf node.

  8. Propagation: Propagation is usually done by stem cuttings. Cut just below a node, let it dry for a few hours to form a callus, then you can place it in water or directly in soil.

  9. Moss Pole Care: Keep the moss pole moist by misting it regularly or watering it directly. This encourages the plant to produce more aerial roots and cling to the pole for support.

  10. Pests and Diseases: Philodendron lupinum is not particularly pest-prone, but you should still watch out for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Proper watering and avoiding water-logged soil can prevent most root diseases.

As with all houseplants, observing your plant regularly and adjusting care as needed is key to keeping it happy and healthy.
