The plant commonly referred to as Adansonii aurea is a variety of the Monstera adansonii, distinguished by its yellow variegation, which gives it the name "aurea," meaning golden. This striking variety is highly prized for its unique, perforated leaves with splashes of golden color.

Description: Monstera adansonii aurea, sometimes known as the Golden Swiss Cheese Plant, features the characteristic heart-shaped leaves of its species but stands out with its variegated yellow patterns. These patterns can vary significantly from leaf to leaf, with some leaves showing a high degree of yellow and others only having small patches. The leaves are perforated with oval holes, which become more numerous and pronounced as the plant matures.

Care Guide:

  1. Light: This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, especially the variegated parts, which are more sensitive to light. However, too little light can reduce the vibrancy of the leaf variegation and lead to fewer holes in the leaves.

  2. Watering: Water when the top inch of soil becomes dry. Ensure the plant is in well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. During winter, reduce watering but never let the soil completely dry out.

  3. Temperature and Humidity: Monstera adansonii aurea prefers warm conditions and high humidity. Maintain temperatures between 18°C to 27°C. Humidity levels around 60% or higher are ideal. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a humidity tray to increase moisture in the air.

  4. Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally one that contains peat, perlite, and pine bark. This combination allows for good moisture retention while still providing drainage.

  5. Feeding: Fertilize every month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength. Avoid fertilizing in the winter when the plant's growth slows.

  6. Repotting: Repot every two to three years or when the plant has outgrown its pot. Spring is the best time for repotting, which provides fresh nutrients and space for continued growth.

  7. Pruning: Regular pruning can help encourage bushier growth and maintain a desired shape. Trim any dead or yellowing leaves, and you can prune back vines to encourage more branching.

  8. Propagation: The Golden Swiss Cheese Plant can be easily propagated via stem cuttings. Cut just below a set of leaves and nodes, and place the cutting in water or directly into soil. Ensure high humidity and warm temperatures to encourage rooting.

Given its stunning appearance and the care needed, Monstera adansonii aurea is a rewarding plant for indoor gardeners looking to add a splash of colour and exotic flair to their surroundings.
