Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. Crassula rupestris ssp. marnieriana ‘Hottentot’ is a distinctive, compact succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to South Africa and Namibia. Commonly known simply as Crassula ‘Hottentot’, this species is admired for its unique, beaded appearance and trailing habit, making it a favourite among collectors and succulent enthusiasts.
The plant forms dense, cascading stems tightly stacked with fleshy, round, overlapping leaves that create a rope-like or chain effect. The leaves are grey-green with red to pink edges, which intensify under bright sunlight or cooler temperatures. Mature plants can produce small clusters of star-shaped, pale pink to white flowers in winter, adding a delicate contrast to its geometric foliage.
Compact and ornamental, Crassula ‘Hottentot’ is ideal for hanging baskets, rock gardens, or small pots, where its trailing stems can spill beautifully over the edges.
Thrives in bright light to full sun. Indoors, position near a sunny south- or west-facing window. Outdoor plants enjoy full sun but should be gradually acclimatised to prevent leaf scorch.
Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can quickly lead to root or stem rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 2–3 weeks; in winter, reduce to once a month or less.
Temperature: Prefers 18–28°C. Protect from frost; minimum 10°C.
Humidity: Tolerates dry air perfectly; avoid overly humid environments.
Use a gritty, free-draining cactus or succulent compost. A mix of sand, perlite, and potting soil works well. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, refreshing the soil to maintain good drainage.
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertiliser. Do not fertilise during winter dormancy.
Trim back leggy or damaged stems to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Cuttings root easily in well-draining soil, making propagation simple.
A slow to moderate grower, typically reaching 15–25 cm tall and forming long trailing stems up to 30 cm. Over time, it forms dense mats or hanging chains of fleshy leaves.
Soft, mushy stems: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering or extended drought.
Leggy growth: Insufficient light.
Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or aphids.
Crassula ‘Hottentot’ is part of the wider Crassula rupestris complex, which includes many geometrically beautiful succulents. Its compact, trailing habit and red-edged leaves make it a charming accent plant for mixed succulent arrangements or minimalist displays. Highly drought-tolerant and undemanding, it’s perfect for sunny windowsills or outdoor summer planters.
