The Monstera obliqua 'Mayuna Variegata' is an exceptionally unusual collector's Monstera, combining the famously delicate, heavily fenestrated foliage of Monstera obliqua with beautiful variegation. It's a plant grown for the serious collector, with each new leaf bringing a different combination of holes, shape and colour.

The foliage is the real attraction. Mature leaves develop extensive natural fenestrations, often leaving relatively little solid leaf tissue between the openings. This creates the incredibly fine, almost lace-like appearance for which Monstera obliqua is famous. Compared with the thicker leaves of more familiar Monsteras, the foliage is noticeably thinner and more delicate.

'Mayuna Variegata' adds another dimension through its cream, pale yellow and light green variegation. The exact pattern varies from leaf to leaf, with some displaying subtle marbling and others producing much more pronounced areas of contrasting colour. No two plants – or even two leaves on the same plant – will look exactly alike.

This is a climbing aroid and should ideally be provided with a moss pole or another moisture-retentive support. Giving the plant something to climb encourages a more natural growth habit and provides the aerial roots with somewhere to establish.

Unlike many commonly available Monsteras, this isn't a plant we'd describe as beginner-friendly. Its thin foliage, variegation and preference for consistently warm, humid conditions mean it requires a little more attention to its environment. For an experienced houseplant enthusiast, however, that's all part of its appeal.

Its rarity, extraordinary fenestrations and unpredictable variegation make Monstera obliqua 'Mayuna Variegata' a true statement piece for a specialist aroid collection.

The size and degree of fenestration will also vary according to the maturity of the plant and its growing conditions.

Light

Provide bright, indirect light for the best growth and variegation.

Because variegated sections of the foliage contain less chlorophyll, 'Mayuna Variegata' benefits from excellent light levels. However, its extremely thin leaves can also be sensitive to harsh direct sunlight.

A position close to a bright window with filtered light is ideal. Gentle morning or evening sunlight may be tolerated, but prolonged strong midday sun can scorch the foliage, particularly the paler variegated sections.

During the darker UK winter months, a suitable grow light can help maintain more consistent growing conditions.

Watering

Aim to keep the growing medium lightly and consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.

Water once the upper layer of the potting mix has started to dry. Don't allow the entire root ball to remain completely dry for extended periods, but equally don't keep the plant permanently saturated.

When watering, thoroughly moisten the growing medium and allow excess water to drain freely from the pot.

The frequency will depend heavily on temperature, humidity, light levels, pot size and the growing medium, so always check the plant rather than following a rigid watering schedule.

Too much water can cause:

This makes 'Mayuna Variegata' particularly well suited to plant cabinets, dedicated plant rooms or other controlled environments.

A humidifier is the most reliable way to increase humidity around a plant kept in an open room.

High humidity should always be accompanied by good airflow. Constantly humid, stagnant conditions can encourage fungal and bacterial problems.

Temperature

Keep your Monstera obliqua somewhere consistently warm.

An approximate range of 20–28°C provides excellent growing conditions. Avoid allowing temperatures to fall below around 16°C, particularly for prolonged periods.

Protect the plant from:

• Direct heat from radiators

Warmth combined with good humidity and bright indirect light will generally produce the strongest growth.

Soil

The exact ingredients are less important than the structure of the finished mix. It should hold some moisture without becoming dense, compacted or saturated.

Climbing Support

Monstera obliqua is naturally a climbing plant, so providing suitable support is highly recommended.

A sphagnum moss pole is particularly useful because aerial roots can grow into the moist surface rather than simply attaching themselves to it.

Encouraging the plant to climb can help support:

• Greater maturity
• Stronger aerial root development
• A more natural growth habit
• Increasingly impressive fenestration

Gently attach the stem to its support rather than tightly fastening individual leaves or petioles.

Feeding

Feed lightly during periods of active growth.

A balanced houseplant or aroid fertiliser can be applied approximately every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer, following the manufacturer's recommended dilution.

Avoid excessive fertilisation. The delicate root system can be damaged by a build-up of fertiliser salts.

Reduce feeding significantly during autumn and winter if growth slows.

Variegation

The variegation is naturally unstable and variable, which means every new leaf can be different.

Providing excellent light gives the plant the energy it needs to maintain healthy variegated growth, but light cannot guarantee a particular variegation pattern.

Very pale or predominantly white sections are also more vulnerable to browning because they contain little or no chlorophyll. Maintaining consistent humidity and watering can help, but some browning of highly variegated areas can occur even when the plant is being cared for correctly.

Repotting

Repot only when necessary.

Monstera obliqua doesn't need an excessively large pot and shouldn't be moved into a substantially larger container. Too much unused growing medium around the root system can remain wet for too long.

When repotting:

1. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the existing one.
2. Prepare a fresh, airy aroid mixture.
3. Carefully remove the plant without unnecessarily disturbing the roots.
4. Inspect for damaged or unhealthy roots.
5. Replant at approximately the same depth.

Spring or early summer is usually the best time to repot because the plant is actively growing and can recover more quickly.

Leaf Care

The extremely thin, fenestrated leaves need to be handled carefully.

Avoid aggressively wiping or cleaning the foliage because the narrow sections between fenestrations can tear easily. If dust needs removing, use a very soft damp cloth and support the leaf from underneath.

Avoid leaf-shine products.

Take additional care when moving the plant, as mature leaves can easily become caught on surrounding objects.

Pruning

Routine pruning isn't normally necessary.

Remove leaves only when they have become significantly damaged, diseased or completely yellow. Always use clean, sterilised scissors or secateurs.

If the plant becomes too large, sections of the stem containing a viable node can be removed, although cutting valuable established growth should be considered carefully.

Yellowing leaves

Check the moisture level of the growing medium. Persistent yellowing accompanied by wet compost can indicate overwatering or root problems.

Curling leaves

Can indicate insufficient moisture, low humidity or excessive heat.

Small leaves with fewer fenestrations

Review light levels and climbing support. Juvenile or stressed growth may be considerably less fenestrated.

Browning variegation

Some browning can occur naturally because highly variegated tissue is particularly delicate. Consistent humidity, watering and good environmental conditions can minimise it.

Very slow growth

Monstera obliqua isn't generally as fast-growing as common Monsteras. Low temperatures, insufficient light or root problems can slow it further.

Pests

Regularly inspect your plant for common houseplant pests, particularly:

The thin foliage can be particularly vulnerable to pest damage, so early detection is important.
