Araucaria heterophylla, commonly known as the Norfolk Island Pine, is a graceful and symmetrical evergreen conifer admired for its soft, tiered branches and classic silhouette. A member of the Araucariaceae family and native to Norfolk Island, a small subtropical island in the South Pacific Ocean between Australia and New Zealand, this species is celebrated for its elegant appearance and versatility as both an indoor and outdoor ornamental tree.
The Norfolk Island Pine features fine, needle-like leaves arranged in perfect whorls along horizontal branches, giving it a naturally geometric shape. Indoors, it grows as a slow, compact specimen with lush green, feathery foliage that resembles a miniature Christmas tree. Outdoors, in subtropical climates, it can mature into a majestic tree reaching up to 20 metres tall.
Soft, architectural, and timelessly beautiful, Araucaria heterophylla brings a sense of calm and balance to interiors β equally at home as a statement plant or festive centrepiece.
Thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun. Too little light can cause sparse, uneven growth, while harsh, direct sunlight may scorch the delicate needles. Rotate occasionally to maintain a symmetrical shape.
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 3β4 cm of soil feels dry, ensuring good drainage. Norfolk Island Pines prefer consistent moisture β avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, but do not let the roots sit in standing water. In winter, reduce watering slightly.
Temperature: Prefers moderate temperatures between 15β25 Β°C. Avoid placing near radiators, air conditioning vents, or cold drafts. Temperatures below 10 Β°C can cause needle drop.
Humidity: Moderate humidity (50β70%) is ideal. Dry air can cause the needle tips to brown β use a humidifier, mist occasionally, or place on a pebble tray to maintain adequate moisture levels.
Use a well-draining, sandy potting mix, similar to a cactus or general-purpose houseplant mix with added perlite or coarse sand. This mimics its native coastal environment. Repot every 2β3 years in spring, moving to a slightly larger pot only when necessary.
Feed every 4β6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Suspend feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows. Over-fertilising can lead to salt build-up and leaf burn.
Minimal pruning is required β simply remove any brown or dried lower branches to keep the plant tidy. Avoid cutting the central growing tip, as this will stop the plant from maintaining its symmetrical, conical form. Dust the needles gently with a soft brush or microfibre cloth to keep them fresh and green.
A slow to moderate grower, Araucaria heterophylla typically reaches 1.5β2 metres indoors over several years. With age, it develops a beautifully tiered structure with soft, layered branches. In warm outdoor environments, it can eventually grow into a tall, stately tree with an unmistakably upright, elegant profile.
Brown or dry needles: Low humidity, underwatering, or excessive heat.
Yellowing lower branches: Normal ageing, but can also signal lack of light.
Sparse growth: Insufficient light or infrequent rotation.
Pests: Occasionally affected by spider mites or scale β treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Discovered on Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, Araucaria heterophylla has been cultivated worldwide for its beauty and resilience. Although often used as a festive indoor tree during winter, it remains evergreen year-round and thrives as a permanent houseplant under the right conditions.
Symbolically, it represents peace, endurance, and stability β qualities reflected in its steady growth and balanced, symmetrical form. Itβs also one of the few conifers that adapts well to indoor conditions, bringing a fresh, coastal calm to homes and offices.
