Codiaeum 'Mammi' (Croton Mammi)

Codiaeum 'Mammi', commonly known as Croton Mammi, is one of the most colourful and distinctive tropical houseplants you can grow. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, this striking variety is admired for its twisted, corkscrew-shaped leaves and vibrant mix of green, yellow, orange, red and burgundy. As the foliage matures, the colours become even more intense, ensuring the plant provides year-round interest without the need for flowers.

The unusual curled foliage gives Croton Mammi a bold, sculptural appearance, making it an ideal statement plant for bright living rooms, conservatories, offices and hallways. Every leaf is unique, creating a dramatic display that instantly adds colour and character to your home.

Although Croton Mammi has a reputation for being slightly more demanding than some houseplants, it is highly rewarding when given the right conditions. Bright light, consistent watering and warm temperatures will encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Indoors, it typically grows to between 60–120cm tall, developing into a dense, bushy plant over time.

Codiaeum 'Mammi' Care Guide

Light

Croton Mammi thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from several hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sunshine. Plenty of light helps maintain the rich reds, oranges and yellows in the foliage. Plants kept in darker locations often produce greener leaves with less vibrant colouring.

Avoid exposing the plant to harsh midday summer sun, particularly through south-facing windows, as this can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Keep the compost evenly moist, allowing the top 2–3cm to dry before watering again. Water thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom of the pot, then empty any decorative pot or saucer to prevent the roots from sitting in water.

During spring and summer, you may need to water once or twice a week depending on the warmth and light levels. Reduce watering during winter when growth naturally slows.

Avoid allowing the compost to completely dry out, as this can cause leaves to wilt and drop.

Humidity

Croton Mammi enjoys moderate to high humidity and thrives in humid environments similar to its tropical origins.

If your home has particularly dry air, especially during winter, increasing humidity can help prevent brown leaf edges. A humidifier, pebble tray or grouping plants together are all effective ways to raise humidity.

Temperature

This tropical houseplant prefers temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.

Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect the plant from cold draughts, radiators and sudden temperature changes. Crotons dislike changes in their environment and may temporarily lose leaves if moved or exposed to fluctuating conditions.

Soil

Plant in a free-draining, nutrient-rich houseplant compost. A mix containing compost, perlite and fine bark provides excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for healthy root growth.

Always choose a pot with drainage holes.

Feeding

Feed every two to four weeks throughout spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Stop feeding during autumn and winter while the plant is growing more slowly.

Repotting

Repot every two to three years, or whenever roots begin emerging from the drainage holes. Move into a pot just one size larger to avoid excess wet compost around the roots.

Spring is the best time to repot.

Growth Rate

Croton Mammi has a moderate growth rate when grown in warm, bright conditions.

Expected indoor size:

  • Height: 60–120cm

  • Spread: 40–80cm

Growth slows significantly during the colder months.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required. Simply remove any yellow, damaged or dead leaves to keep the plant looking its best.

Pinching out the growing tips can encourage a fuller, bushier shape.

Toxicity

Croton Mammi is toxic if ingested and should be kept away from pets and young children.

The milky sap may also irritate skin, so wearing gloves when pruning or repotting is recommended.

Common Problems

Leaves Dropping

Crotons are well known for dropping leaves when their environment changes.

Common causes include:

  • Moving the plant to a new location

  • Cold draughts

  • Sudden temperature changes

  • Overwatering

  • Underwatering

Once conditions become stable, healthy new growth should develop.

Leaves Losing Their Colour

If the vibrant reds and oranges begin fading to green, the plant usually needs more light.

Move it to a brighter position with plenty of indirect sunlight.

Brown Leaf Edges

Brown leaf edges are often caused by:

  • Low humidity

  • Dry compost

  • Cold air

  • Heating vents

Maintaining even moisture and increasing humidity usually solves the problem.

Yellow Leaves

Yellowing leaves are commonly caused by overwatering or poor drainage.

Allow the compost to dry slightly between waterings and ensure excess water drains away freely.

Pests

Croton Mammi can occasionally attract:

  • Spider mites

  • Mealybugs

  • Scale insects

Check the leaves regularly, especially underneath, and treat any infestations promptly with an appropriate houseplant insecticide or insecticidal soap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Croton Mammi dropping leaves?

Leaf drop is usually a response to environmental changes such as moving the plant, temperature fluctuations or inconsistent watering. Once the plant settles, new growth should appear.

Does Croton Mammi need direct sunlight?

A few hours of gentle morning or evening sun is beneficial, but avoid prolonged exposure to strong midday sunshine.

How often should I water Croton Mammi?

Water whenever the top few centimetres of compost feel dry. Keep the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Why are the leaves turning green?

Crotons lose some of their vibrant colouring when they don't receive enough light. Moving the plant to a brighter position will usually restore stronger colours over time.

Is Croton Mammi suitable for beginners?

Croton Mammi is slightly more demanding than many common houseplants, but with consistent warmth, bright light and regular watering it is straightforward to care for and highly rewarding.
