Golden Schefflera is a bright and cheerful variegated umbrella plant with glossy leaves splashed in shades of golden yellow and green. Each leaf is made up of several oval leaflets arranged in a circular pattern, resembling the spokes of an umbrella.

The variegation can vary from plant to plant, with some leaves showing broad golden centres and others having lighter yellow speckling or marbling across the foliage. The vivid colouring makes Golden Schefflera much brighter and more eye-catching than the standard green form.

It grows as an upright, branching plant and can eventually reach 1–2m tall indoors, although it can easily be kept smaller with regular pruning. Its strong, upright growth and colourful foliage make it an excellent choice for adding height and brightness to a room.

The golden foliage would fit particularly well with your Variegated Houseplant Collection and would also complement the warmer tones in your Pink Hues collection.

Detailed Care Guide

Light

Golden Schefflera prefers bright, indirect light.

A position close to an east or west-facing window is ideal. It can tolerate a little gentle morning or late afternoon sun, which may help keep the yellow colouring vibrant.

Too little light can cause:

  • Slower growth
  • Fading variegation
  • Leaves becoming greener

Avoid strong midday sun, as this can scorch the lighter parts of the leaves.

Watering

Allow the top 3–5cm of compost to dry out before watering.

  • Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away
  • Never let the plant sit in water
  • Reduce watering during winter

Golden Schefflera is more tolerant of slightly dry conditions than overwatering. Wet compost for long periods can quickly lead to root rot and leaf drop.

Humidity

Golden Schefflera adapts well to average household humidity but will appreciate slightly higher humidity if possible.

If the air is very dry, particularly in winter, the leaf tips may become brown. A pebble tray or grouping with other plants can help.

Temperature

This plant grows best between 18–24°C.

Avoid:

  • Temperatures below 12–15°C
  • Cold draughts
  • Sudden temperature changes
  • Placing it directly beside radiators

Compost

Use a well-draining houseplant compost.

A good mix is:

  • 2 parts houseplant compost
  • 1 part perlite
  • Optional small amount of bark or grit for extra drainage

Golden Schefflera does not like heavy, compacted compost.

Feeding

Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser.

Do not overfeed, as this can cause soft, weak growth.

Pruning

Golden Schefflera responds very well to pruning.

Trim back long stems in spring or summer to:

  • Encourage bushier growth
  • Maintain a more compact shape
  • Prevent the plant becoming leggy

Any stems that become too long can be cut back quite hard if needed.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years in spring, or when:

  • Roots are growing through the drainage holes
  • The compost dries out very quickly
  • The plant has become top-heavy

Only move up one pot size at a time.

Common Problems

  • Yellowing leaves: Usually caused by overwatering
  • Leaf drop: Sudden temperature changes, draughts or inconsistent watering
  • Brown tips: Dry air or underwatering
  • Fading variegation: Not enough light
  • Leggy growth: Too little light or lack of pruning

Pet Safety

Golden Schefflera is considered mildly toxic if eaten and should be kept away from pets and young children. The sap can also sometimes irritate the skin, so it is best to wash your hands after pruning or handling the plant.
