When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. Tradescantia ‘Brightness’ is a striking cultivar from the Commelinaceae family, prized for its luminous foliage and vigorous trailing habit. Native Tradescantia species originate in the Americas, where they thrive in a variety of habitats, but this cultivar has been bred for its decorative appeal and easy care indoors.
The foliage of ‘Brightness’ is its standout feature. Each lance-shaped leaf is striped in crisp white, pale green, and silvery tones, giving the plant a fresh and glowing appearance. The variegation creates a light, airy effect that brightens shaded spots in the home. When grown in brighter light, the colours intensify and the silvery striping develops an attractive shimmer.
Compact but fast-growing, Tradescantia ‘Brightness’ is excellent for hanging baskets, tall planters, or trailing from shelves, where its cascading vines create a soft, flowing display.
Thrives in bright, indirect light, which maintains vivid variegation. Tolerates medium light but may develop more green leaves. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the delicate variegated areas.
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy, and avoid letting the plant sit in water. In winter, reduce watering frequency.
Temperature: Best in 16–26°C. Protect from draughts and cold temperatures below 12°C.
Humidity: Adapts to average household humidity but benefits from moderate to high humidity for lusher growth.
Use a light, free-draining houseplant compost with added perlite or sand. Repot every 1–2 years to refresh the mix and encourage vigorous growth.
Feed every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.
Pinch back stems regularly to promote bushier growth and prevent legginess. Trim older or faded stems to encourage fresh new shoots. Cuttings root very easily in water or soil, making it an ideal plant to propagate and share.
A quick grower under the right conditions, producing cascading vines up to 50–80 cm long. With regular pruning, it stays compact and full.
Leggy stems: Often caused by insufficient light.
Leaf scorch: From excessive direct sun.
Loss of variegation: Insufficient light.
Pests: Occasionally mealybugs, spider mites, or aphids.
Tradescantia ‘Brightness’ is one of the most decorative trailing houseplants, combining ease of care with luminous foliage that lifts interiors. Its adaptability makes it perfect for both beginners and seasoned collectors, and its trailing habit softens shelves and corners beautifully.
