Ledebouria socialis (Silver Squill)

Ledebouria socialis, commonly known as the Silver Squill, is a fascinating bulbous succulent prized for its attractive silver-spotted foliage and compact growth habit. Native to South Africa, this unique plant produces clusters of small bulbs that sit partially above the soil surface, creating an unusual and decorative appearance.

The leaves are silver-green with darker green mottled markings on the upper surface and rich purple undersides, providing year-round interest. As the plant matures, it produces offsets freely, forming dense clumps that make an impressive display in pots and succulent collections.

During spring and summer, mature plants may produce delicate upright flower spikes adorned with small greenish-pink flowers, adding further charm to this easy-care species.

Plant Care Guide

Light

Ledebouria socialis thrives in bright light.

  • Place near a bright window with plenty of indirect light.

  • Can tolerate a few hours of gentle direct morning or evening sun.

  • Brighter conditions encourage stronger leaf colouration and compact growth.

Watering

Allow the compost to partially dry between waterings.

  • Water thoroughly when required.

  • Reduce watering significantly during winter.

  • Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet.

As a bulbous succulent, Ledebouria socialis is much more tolerant of underwatering than overwatering.

Humidity

Average household humidity is perfectly suitable.

  • Does not require additional humidity.

  • Appreciates good airflow around the foliage.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures:

  • 15°C–28°C

Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 5°C.

Soil

Use a free-draining compost mix.

A suitable mix may contain:

  • Cactus or succulent compost

  • Perlite

  • Horticultural grit

Excellent drainage is essential to prevent bulb rot.

Feeding

Feed sparingly during spring and summer.

  • Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.

  • Apply every 6–8 weeks during active growth.

Growth Habit

Ledebouria socialis forms attractive clumps as it matures.

  • Produces numerous offsets around the parent bulbs.

  • Ideal for windowsills, succulent displays and decorative pots.

  • Bulbs should remain partially exposed above the soil surface.

Flowering

Mature plants may produce:

  • Slender upright flower spikes

  • Small green, pink or lavender-tinted flowers

  • Blooms during spring and summer

The flowers are delicate and add seasonal interest without detracting from the attractive foliage.
