Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' in Hanging Pot

Product Description

The Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor', also known as the Krimson Princess, is a stunning trailing houseplant loved for its thick, waxy leaves featuring beautiful splashes of cream, green and pink. Supplied in a hanging pot, its cascading vines create an elegant display, making it perfect for hanging baskets, shelves and plant hangers.

One of the most eye-catching features of this Hoya is its colourful new growth. Fresh leaves often emerge in vibrant shades of bright pink before gradually maturing into a striking combination of cream and green. The unique variegation means no two leaves are exactly alike, giving every plant its own individual character.

Native to the tropical forests of Eastern Asia and Australia, Hoya carnosa naturally grows as an epiphyte, climbing trees and cascading through the forest canopy. Its succulent-like leaves store water, making it more drought tolerant than many other tropical houseplants and an excellent choice for busy plant owners.

With the right care, mature plants may also reward you with clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers. These delicate blooms are pale pink with darker pink centres and are produced in rounded umbels, often releasing a sweet fragrance during the evening.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced collector, the Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' is an attractive, easy-care houseplant that provides year-round interest.

Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' Care Guide

Light

Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' thrives in bright, indirect light.

Bright conditions help maintain the plant's vibrant variegation and encourage flowering. It can also tolerate several hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sunshine.

Avoid prolonged exposure to intense midday sun, which may scorch the leaves.

Ideal lighting conditions:

  • Bright, indirect light

  • A few hours of gentle morning or evening sun

  • East or west-facing windows are ideal

  • Avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sunshine

Rotate the hanging pot every few weeks to encourage even growth.

Watering

Allow the compost to dry out well between waterings.

Water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom of the pot, then allow all excess water to drain away completely.

Thanks to its thick, water-storing leaves, Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' is more tolerant of underwatering than overwatering.

During spring and summer, watering is typically needed every 10–14 days, while in winter this may reduce to every 3–4 weeks, depending on your home's conditions.

Signs your plant needs watering include:

  • Dry compost

  • Slightly softer leaves

  • A lighter pot when lifted

Always check the compost before watering.

Humidity

Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' enjoys average to moderately high humidity, ideally between 40% and 60%.

It grows well in typical household conditions but benefits from higher humidity during the growing season.

Good airflow is equally important to keep the foliage healthy.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 28°C.

Avoid temperatures below 12°C, cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding

Feed every 4 weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half the recommended strength.

A fertiliser slightly higher in potassium during late spring and summer may encourage flowering on mature plants.

Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.

Soil

Use a light, chunky and free-draining mix.

A suitable Hoya mix includes:

  • Peat-free houseplant compost

  • Orchid bark

  • Perlite or pumice

  • Horticultural charcoal (optional)

Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Repotting

Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound and generally only need repotting every 2–3 years.

Repot in spring using a pot only one size larger than the current one.

Always choose a pot with drainage holes.

Growth Habit

Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' naturally produces long, trailing vines that look stunning cascading from hanging pots.

It can also be trained around hoops, trellises or supports if a more structured display is preferred.

As the plant matures, the vines continue to lengthen and may eventually produce flower clusters from established growth.

Flowering

Healthy, mature plants can produce clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers from spring through to late summer.

The blooms are:

  • Pale pink with darker pink centres

  • Sweetly scented, especially in the evening

  • Produced in rounded clusters called umbels

Avoid removing old flower spurs after blooming, as Hoyas often flower from the same spurs year after year.

Pruning

Trim excessively long vines if required to maintain the desired shape.

Remove any dead or damaged leaves using clean scissors.

Avoid cutting off flower spurs, as this may reduce future flowering.

Propagation

Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' is easily propagated from stem cuttings.

Each cutting should include:

  • At least one node

  • One or two healthy leaves

Root cuttings in water, sphagnum moss or a free-draining propagation mix before potting into compost.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves

Usually caused by:

  • Overwatering

  • Poor drainage

  • Waterlogged compost

Wrinkled leaves

May indicate:

  • Underwatering

  • Roots damaged by prolonged overwatering

Check both the compost moisture and root health.

Loss of variegation

Usually caused by:

  • Insufficient light

Move the plant to a brighter location with plenty of indirect light.

Failure to flower

Often due to:

  • The plant being too young

  • Low light levels

  • Frequent repotting

  • Removing flower spurs

Mature, slightly root-bound plants in bright conditions are the most likely to flower.

Toxicity

Hoya carnosa 'Tricolor' is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a popular choice for pet-friendly homes. However, it's still advisable to discourage pets and children from chewing the foliage, as consuming any houseplant may cause mild digestive upset.
