Philodendron Micans is a beautiful trailing plant cherished for its velvety, heart-shaped leaves that exhibit a rich tapestry of colours. Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, this philodendron is a perfect addition to any indoor garden, particularly in hanging baskets or on shelves where its vines can cascade gracefully. Here are some key characteristics of Philodendron Micans:

  • Leaves: The leaves are heart-shaped and velvety to the touch, providing a soft and luxurious texture. They typically measure 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) in length.
  • Colour: The foliage ranges from deep green to bronze or even purple hues, with new leaves often displaying a reddish tint. The undersides of the leaves are typically a striking purplish-red.
  • Growth Habit: Philodendron Micans is a trailing or climbing plant, making it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or trellises.
  • Size: The vines can grow up to 1.2-1.8 metres (4-6 feet) long, creating a lush and cascading effect.

Care Guide

Philodendron Micans is relatively easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts. Here are detailed instructions to ensure your plant thrives:

  1. Light:

    • Optimal Conditions: Provide bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but the colours of the leaves may become less vibrant, and growth may slow.
    • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Direct sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves, causing them to turn yellow or brown.
  2. Watering:

    • Frequency: Water when the top 2-3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry. This plant prefers consistently moist soil but should not be waterlogged.
    • Method: Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain out of the bottom of the pot. Be sure to empty any standing water in the saucer.
  3. Humidity:

    • Preferred Range: Philodendron Micans thrives in high humidity, ideally between 60-80%. Regular misting, a humidifier, or a pebble tray with water can help maintain adequate humidity levels.
    • Dry Air: If the air is too dry, the leaf edges may brown, and the plant may exhibit slower growth.
  4. Temperature:

    • Ideal Range: Maintain a warm environment, between 18-27°C (65-80°F). Avoid exposure to cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
    • Minimum Tolerance: Do not expose the plant to temperatures below 13°C (55°F), as this can cause damage to the foliage.
  5. Soil:

    • Type: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as one designed for aroids or a mix of potting soil, perlite, and peat moss. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
    • pH Level: A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) is ideal.
  6. Fertilising:

    • Frequency: Fertilise monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength.
    • Dormant Period: Reduce fertilisation during autumn and winter when the plant's growth naturally slows.
  7. Pruning and Maintenance:

    • Pruning: Trim any dead or yellowing leaves to promote healthy growth. You can also prune to control the plant’s size and shape and encourage bushier growth.
    • Cleaning: Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis.
  8. Repotting:

    • Timing: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Spring is the best time for repotting.
    • Pot Size: Choose a pot that is 2-3 cm (1-2 inches) larger in diameter than the current one to allow room for growth.
  9. Support:

    • Trailing Needs: While it can trail naturally from a hanging basket, you can also provide a trellis or moss pole if you prefer a climbing growth habit.
  10. Pests and Problems:

    • Common Pests: Watch for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
    • Common Issues: Overwatering, low humidity, and insufficient light are common problems. Address these by adjusting care routines as needed.

By following these care guidelines, your Philodendron Micans will thrive, displaying its luxurious, velvety foliage and adding a touch of tropical elegance to your indoor space.

Plastic Nursery Pots: All our plants are supplied in practical plastic nursery pots. If you prefer a more decorative option, we offer a range of stylish pots available for purchase separately.

Non-Consumable: Please note that our plants are intended for ornamental purposes only unless specifically stated as edible. Ensure you check product descriptions carefully if you are looking for edible varieties.

Variable Heights: The height of our plants can vary by approximately +/- 10%. This natural fluctuation ensures you receive a unique and healthy specimen.

Plant Pot Sizes: Pot sizes may vary by approximately +/- 1cm. To ensure a proper fit, we recommend selecting a decorative pot that is 1-2cm larger than the stated plant pot size. For instance, if you purchase a plant in a 17cm pot, a 18 - 19cm decorative pot would be ideal.

Quarantining: All our houseplants are regularly sprayed with a preventative systemic bug treatment. We do our best to ensure a bug free growing environment however sometimes these can unfortunately be missed, as such we always recommend quarantining plants when they first enter your home and checking them upon arrival for bugs.
