Variegated String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata') Hanging Pot

Product Description

The Variegated String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata') is a beautiful trailing succulent, admired for its delicate heart-shaped leaves patterned with shades of soft green, cream and blush pink. Displayed in a hanging pot, its cascading vines create an elegant waterfall of foliage, making it one of the most popular trailing houseplants for shelves, hanging baskets and plant hangers.

Each pair of leaves is uniquely variegated, with the intensity of the pink colouring often increasing when the plant receives plenty of bright light. As the stems grow, they can reach several metres in length, creating a stunning display that becomes more impressive with age.

Native to southern Africa, Variegated String of Hearts stores water within its leaves and fine tubers, making it remarkably drought tolerant and easy to care for. Its graceful appearance, combined with its forgiving nature, makes it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced houseplant enthusiasts.

During the growing season, mature plants may also produce unusual lantern-shaped flowers in shades of pale pink and purple, adding another layer of interest to this charming houseplant.

Why you'll love it

  • Beautiful cascading trails of heart-shaped variegated leaves

  • Cream, green and blush pink colouring

  • Perfect for hanging pots, shelves and plant hangers

  • Drought tolerant and easy to care for

  • Fast-growing in bright conditions

  • May produce unusual tubular pink flowers

Variegated String of Hearts Care Guide

Light

Variegated String of Hearts thrives in bright light and can tolerate several hours of gentle direct morning or late afternoon sunshine.

Bright conditions help maintain strong variegation and encourage the attractive pink tones that develop on the foliage.

Insufficient light can lead to longer gaps between leaves and reduced variegation.

Ideal lighting conditions:

  • Bright indirect light

  • A few hours of morning or evening sun

  • South or west-facing windows are ideal

  • Avoid prolonged harsh midday summer sun through glass

Rotate the hanging pot occasionally to encourage even growth.

Watering

As a succulent, Variegated String of Hearts prefers to dry out between waterings.

Allow the compost to dry almost completely before watering thoroughly. Water until excess drains from the pot, then allow it to drain fully.

During spring and summer, watering is usually required every 10–14 days, while in winter this may reduce to every 3–4 weeks, depending on your home's conditions.

Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

Signs your plant needs watering include:

  • Dry compost

  • Slightly softer leaves

  • Trails becoming less firm

Humidity

Average household humidity is perfectly suitable.

Unlike many tropical houseplants, Variegated String of Hearts does not require high humidity and generally performs well in typical indoor environments.

Avoid overly damp conditions with poor air circulation.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 26°C.

Protect the plant from temperatures below 10°C, cold draughts and frost.

Feeding

Feed once a month during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant or cactus fertiliser at half the recommended strength.

Do not feed during winter while the plant is resting.

Soil

Use a free-draining succulent or cactus compost.

For improved drainage, consider adding:

  • Perlite

  • Pumice

  • Fine horticultural grit

Well-draining soil helps prevent root rot and keeps the tubers healthy.

Repotting

Variegated String of Hearts prefers being slightly root-bound and rarely needs frequent repotting.

Repot every 2–3 years, or when the plant has completely filled its pot.

Choose a pot with drainage holes and increase by only one pot size.

Growth Habit

This plant naturally produces long, trailing stems that can eventually grow several metres in length.

It looks particularly effective:

  • Hanging from baskets

  • Displayed on shelves

  • Trailing from tall cabinets

  • In macramé plant hangers

The vines can be gently coiled back into the pot if you prefer a fuller appearance.

Pruning

Trim long vines to maintain the desired shape or encourage branching.

Removing the growing tips often stimulates the production of additional stems, resulting in a fuller plant.

Healthy cuttings can easily be propagated.

Propagation

Variegated String of Hearts is very easy to propagate.

You can root stem cuttings by:

  • Placing cuttings on top of moist compost

  • Rooting in water

  • Using sphagnum moss

  • Pinning sections of vine directly onto compost while still attached to the parent plant

Tiny tubers that develop along the stems can also be rooted to create new plants.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves

Usually caused by:

  • Overwatering

  • Poor drainage

  • Waterlogged compost

Wrinkled or soft leaves

Usually indicates:

  • Underwatering

  • Extended periods of drought

Water thoroughly once the compost has dried.

Long gaps between leaves

Typically caused by:

  • Insufficient light

Move the plant to a brighter position.

Loss of pink colouring

Usually caused by lower light levels.

Providing brighter light encourages stronger variegation and blush pink tones.

Toxicity

Variegated String of Hearts is generally considered non-toxic to cats, dogs and humans, making it a popular choice for pet-friendly homes. However, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing the foliage, as eating any houseplant may cause mild stomach upset.
