Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. Alocasia infernalis ‘Black Magic’ is an exceptionally rare and exotic tropical plant from the rainforests of Borneo, belonging to the Araceae family. It is one of the most striking Jewel Alocasia varieties, admired for its dark, metallic foliage and otherworldly beauty.
The plant produces broad, heart-shaped leaves with an extraordinary deep burgundy to almost jet-black sheen that changes with the light. The surface of the leaves is highly reflective and velvety, giving it a metallic, mirror-like appearance — almost as though they’ve been dipped in liquid obsidian. The undersides contrast beautifully in rich maroon or red tones.
Compact yet bold, Alocasia ‘Black Magic’ makes a stunning statement piece for collectors of rare and unusual tropical plants. Its dark, moody tones bring an elegant and dramatic flair to terrariums, greenhouses, or humid indoor environments.
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the dark leaves, while too little light will cause the plant to lose its lustre and slow its growth. East- or north-facing windows are ideal.
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm feels slightly dry. Consistency is key — avoid letting the plant dry out completely, but ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Temperature: Thrives in warmth, 22–28°C. Avoid temperatures below 18°C.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (70–90%) to maintain its velvety texture and deep colour. Mist frequently, use a humidifier, or grow inside a terrarium or cabinet for best results.
Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix – peat-free compost combined with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. This provides airflow and moisture retention without waterlogging. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil.
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can damage the delicate roots.
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves from the base. Wipe leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to maintain their metallic sheen. Avoid leaf polish products, as they can dull or damage the surface.
A compact, slow-growing plant that typically reaches 30–50 cm tall. With consistent warmth and humidity, ‘Black Magic’ produces new leaves regularly, each darker and more iridescent than the last.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or low temperatures.
Brown edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Pale leaves: Insufficient light.
Dormancy: Common during cooler months — reduce watering and resume once new growth appears.
Pests: Occasionally spider mites, thrips, or mealybugs.
Native to the humid forests of Borneo, Alocasia infernalis (meaning “of the underworld”) earns its name from the mysterious, near-black hue of its leaves. The ‘Black Magic’ cultivar is one of the darkest in the genus, captivating collectors with its rare, almost supernatural appearance.
While it requires a little extra care and attention — particularly in humidity — the reward is one of the most breathtaking foliage plants available, perfect for those looking to expand their rare tropical collection.
