Rhipsalis holviana is an unusual and highly decorative tropical cactus grown for its long, slender stems and naturally cascading growth habit. Rather than originating from the dry, exposed environments associated with traditional cacti, Rhipsalis are epiphytic jungle cacti, adapted to growing amongst trees and other vegetation in warm, humid forests.

The plant develops elongated green stems that branch as it matures, eventually creating a dense mass of trailing growth. Its narrow stems give the plant a delicate, almost coral-like appearance, while established specimens can produce impressive cascades that spill over the sides of their pots.

This natural trailing habit makes Rhipsalis holviana particularly well suited to hanging planters, shelves, plant stands and tall pots, where the stems are given plenty of space to grow downwards.

As the plant matures, small flowers may appear along the stems under favourable growing conditions. These can subsequently be followed by small berry-like fruits, adding another interesting feature to an already distinctive houseplant.

Despite its exotic appearance, Rhipsalis holviana is relatively straightforward to grow indoors. The main difference compared with traditional desert cacti is that it prefers more regular moisture, slightly higher humidity and protection from intense direct sunlight.

Rhipsalis holviana Care Guide

Light

Rhipsalis holviana grows best in bright, indirect light.

In its natural environment, Rhipsalis typically grows beneath or amongst larger vegetation where it receives filtered sunlight rather than prolonged exposure to intense direct sun.

An east- or west-facing window is usually ideal. It can also grow well in a bright room positioned slightly away from a south-facing window.

Gentle morning or late-afternoon sunlight is generally well tolerated, but strong midday sunlight can scorch the stems and cause pale, yellow or brown patches.

If the plant has previously been grown in relatively low light, introduce it to brighter conditions gradually.

Rhipsalis holviana will tolerate somewhat lower light levels, although growth may become slower and less dense. Flowering is also more likely when the plant receives plenty of bright, indirect light.

Ideal: Bright, filtered or indirect light.

Watering

Rhipsalis holviana should not be watered in exactly the same way as a traditional desert cactus.

It appreciates more regular moisture, although the compost should never remain permanently wet.

Allow the upper portion of the compost to dry before watering again. When the plant is ready for water, thoroughly soak the growing medium until excess water drains from the bottom of the pot.

Always allow the excess water to drain away completely and avoid leaving the plant standing in water.

During spring and summer, when temperatures and light levels increase, the plant will usually use water more quickly. Watering should normally be reduced during autumn and winter as growth slows.

Avoid following a strict watering schedule. How quickly the compost dries will depend on:

  • Temperature
  • Light levels
  • Humidity
  • Pot size
  • Growing medium
  • Size of the plant
  • Time of year

Check the compost before watering rather than automatically watering every week.

If the plant remains completely dry for too long, the stems may begin to wrinkle or shrivel. Conversely, permanently saturated compost can lead to root and stem rot.

Humidity

As a jungle cactus, Rhipsalis holviana appreciates moderate to higher humidity.

Normal household humidity is generally sufficient, but slightly more humid conditions can encourage healthy growth and help prevent the slender stems from becoming dehydrated.

Bright bathrooms and kitchens can therefore make particularly good locations.

Humidity can become much lower in centrally heated homes during winter, so avoid positioning the plant directly above a radiator or beside another strong source of dry heat.

While Rhipsalis enjoys humidity, good airflow remains important. A combination of very high humidity, poor ventilation and permanently wet compost can encourage fungal problems and rot.

Temperature

Rhipsalis holviana prefers warm and relatively stable indoor temperatures.

An ideal range is approximately 18–27Β°C.

It should be protected from prolonged cold conditions, particularly temperatures below approximately 10–12Β°C.

Avoid:

  • Cold draughts
  • Frost
  • Sudden temperature changes
  • Positioning immediately beside frequently opened doors during winter
  • Direct heat from radiators

Normal household temperatures are generally ideal throughout most of the year.

Soil

Rhipsalis holviana requires a light, airy and free-draining growing medium.

Although it is a cactus, an extremely dry desert cactus mixture isn't necessarily the best choice. In nature, epiphytic Rhipsalis species grow amongst organic material while benefiting from excellent drainage and considerable airflow around their roots.

A suitable mixture can include:

  • Quality houseplant compost
  • Orchid bark
  • Perlite or pumice
  • Coco coir
  • Fine horticultural bark

The ideal mixture should retain enough moisture to prevent the roots from drying immediately while still allowing excess water to drain quickly.

Heavy, compacted compost should be avoided as it can remain wet around the roots for too long.

Feeding

Feed Rhipsalis holviana during its active growing period, generally from spring until early autumn.

A balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser or suitable cactus feed can be applied at a diluted strength approximately once every 3–4 weeks.

Avoid excessive fertilisation. Rhipsalis is not an especially heavy feeder and too much fertiliser can result in a build-up of salts within the compost.

During autumn and winter, feeding can usually be reduced considerably or stopped altogether as growth naturally slows.

Repotting

Rhipsalis holviana does not require frequent repotting and generally doesn't mind being slightly root-bound.

Repot approximately every 2–3 years, or when there are clear signs that the plant has outgrown its container.

Signs that repotting may be required include:

  • Large numbers of roots emerging from drainage holes
  • Compost drying unusually quickly
  • Severely compacted or degraded compost
  • The plant becoming unstable in its existing pot
  • Growth slowing despite otherwise suitable conditions

When repotting, choose a container only slightly larger than the current pot.

Avoid moving a small root system into a disproportionately large container, as the increased volume of compost can remain wet for considerably longer and increase the risk of root rot.

Spring is generally the best time to repot.

Pruning

Rhipsalis holviana does not require regular pruning.

However, established plants can develop extremely long stems, so occasional trimming can be used to control the plant's overall size and shape.

Remove:

  • Damaged stems
  • Dead growth
  • Excessively long stems
  • Any soft or unhealthy sections

Always use clean, sharp scissors or secateurs.

Pruning can also encourage additional branching, helping to produce a fuller, denser plant.

Healthy sections removed during pruning can often be propagated.

Propagation

Rhipsalis holviana can be propagated relatively easily from stem cuttings.

Take a healthy section of stem using clean scissors or secateurs.

Allow the cut end to dry for approximately 24–48 hours before planting. This gives the wound time to begin sealing and can reduce the chance of the cutting rotting.

Insert the cutting into a small container filled with a light, free-draining growing medium.

Keep the compost lightly moist rather than saturated and position the cutting somewhere warm with plenty of bright, indirect light.

Once roots have developed and you begin to see new growth, gradually transition to normal Rhipsalis care.

Several cuttings can also be planted together in the same pot to create a fuller-looking plant.

Common Problems

Wrinkled or Shrunken Stems

Wrinkled stems are commonly associated with dehydration.

Check the compost. If it is completely dry, thoroughly water the plant and allow excess water to drain.

However, don't automatically assume that wrinkling means the plant requires more water.

Roots damaged by prolonged overwatering can no longer absorb moisture efficiently, which can also result in dehydrated-looking growth despite the compost being wet.

If the soil is already damp, inspect the roots before watering again.

Yellowing Stems

Yellowing stems can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Excessive watering
  • Poor drainage
  • Insufficient light
  • Sudden environmental changes
  • Cold temperatures
  • Natural ageing of older stems

If yellowing affects several areas of the plant simultaneously, check the condition of the compost and roots.

Soft or Mushy Stems

Soft, dark or mushy stems are often an indication of rot.

Remove affected sections using clean cutting tools.

Check the roots and compost, particularly if the growing medium has remained wet for an extended period.

If root rot is present, remove damaged roots and repot the healthy remaining plant into fresh, free-draining compost.

Brown or Bleached Patches

Dry, pale, bleached or brown patches can indicate sun scorch.

This is particularly likely if the plant has recently been moved into direct midday or afternoon sunshine.

Move the plant into bright but filtered light.

Existing damaged areas will not turn green again, but new growth should develop normally once the lighting conditions have been corrected.

Brown or Crispy Stem Tips

Crispy tips can result from:

  • Prolonged underwatering
  • Very low humidity
  • Excessive heat
  • Fertiliser build-up
  • Inconsistent watering

Review the plant's overall environment rather than simply increasing watering immediately.

Lack of Growth

Slow growth is normal during the darker autumn and winter months.

If growth remains slow during spring and summer, possible causes include:

  • Insufficient light
  • Low temperatures
  • Lack of nutrients
  • Compacted compost
  • Root problems
  • The plant requiring repotting

Increasing light levels is often particularly important for encouraging stronger growth.

Flowering

Mature Rhipsalis holviana may produce small flowers along its stems when growing conditions are favourable.

These flowers can subsequently be followed by small berry-like fruits.

Flowering is more likely when the plant receives:

  • Plenty of bright, indirect light
  • Consistent but appropriate watering
  • Regular light feeding during the growing season
  • Warm temperatures
  • A slight seasonal reduction in watering

Flowering indoors cannot be guaranteed, particularly on younger plants, but established specimens kept in good conditions have the best chance.

Is Rhipsalis holviana Easy to Care For?

Rhipsalis holviana is generally considered an easy to moderately easy houseplant.

Its care requirements are slightly different from those of a traditional desert cactus, but once this distinction is understood, it is relatively forgiving.

The key is finding the balance between moisture and drainage.

It should receive more water than most desert cacti, but its roots should never remain permanently saturated. Combine this with bright indirect light, warm temperatures and moderate humidity and the plant can develop into a substantial cascading specimen.

Best Position in the Home

Rhipsalis holviana is particularly attractive when its stems are given plenty of space to cascade naturally.

Good positions include:

  • Hanging planters
  • High shelves
  • Tall plant stands
  • The top of a cabinet or bookcase
  • Bright bathrooms
  • Bright kitchens
  • Near east- or west-facing windows
  • As part of a tropical plant display

Avoid positioning the plant somewhere its stems will constantly be knocked or brushed against, particularly once they become long.

Given enough space, established plants can create an impressive curtain of trailing green growth.
