Nepenthes ‘Miranda’ is a spectacular large-pitchered hybrid celebrated for its dramatic size, vivid colouring, and vigorous growth. Believed to be a cross between Nepenthes maxima and Nepenthes northiana, this hybrid inherits the bold shape and flared peristome of its parents, producing some of the most impressive pitchers found in cultivation.

The plant’s long, elegant leaves are glossy green with a subtle bronze tint, giving rise to striking lime-green pitchers heavily mottled with crimson and burgundy. Each trap is finished with a wide, fluted peristome that ranges from bronze to deep maroon under bright light. Mature pitchers can exceed 25–30 cm in length, with intricate red markings that intensify as the plant matures.

With its commanding presence, fast growth, and easy adaptability, Nepenthes ‘Miranda’ is a true centrepiece for any collection — a plant that embodies tropical drama and refinement in equal measure.

Nepenthes ‘Miranda’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light or gentle filtered sun. Several hours of morning or late-afternoon light encourage vibrant pitcher colour and strong growth. Avoid harsh midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, and deep shade, which may reduce pitcher production.

Watering

Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use only rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis (RO) water. Minerals from tap water can accumulate and damage the roots. The soil should remain lightly damp at all times, but never soggy or stagnant.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 22–30 °C during the day and 16–20 °C at night. Avoid temperatures below 12 °C.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–90%) to maintain large, healthy pitchers. Mist daily, use a humidifier, or grow inside a terrarium or greenhouse for best results.

Soil and Potting

Use a light, acidic, and well-aerated mix such as sphagnum moss combined with perlite and orchid bark. Avoid nutrient-rich or compact soil. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the medium and prevent root crowding.

Feeding

Nepenthes ‘Miranda’ naturally traps insects such as flies and ants, providing it with supplemental nutrition. When grown indoors, you can feed one or two pitchers monthly with small insects or a drop of diluted orchid fertiliser. Never fertilise the soil directly.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove brown or withered pitchers to encourage new growth and maintain an attractive display. Prune overly long vines if necessary to shape the plant. Keep the foliage clean by gently wiping with a damp cloth.

Growth and Maturity

A large, vigorous hybrid, Nepenthes ‘Miranda’ can reach 1.5–2 metres in length indoors and even larger in greenhouse conditions. It produces pitchers prolifically under stable warmth and humidity, each one beautifully patterned and robust. As the plant matures, upper pitchers may become more slender with longer tendrils and dramatic flared peristomes.

Common Issues

  • Pitchers not forming: Insufficient light or low humidity.

  • Brown tips: Dry air or water containing minerals.

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or cold stress.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or aphids; remove manually and treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.

Background and Benefits

Nepenthes ‘Miranda’ is one of the most popular and photogenic hybrids in cultivation, combining the size and colour of N. maxima with the exotic peristome shape of N. northiana. Native to Southeast Asia’s warm, humid forests, its parent species thrive in bright filtered light and moist, airy conditions — traits that make ‘Miranda’ equally adaptable and forgiving in cultivation.

This hybrid is a favourite among collectors for its giant pitchers, reliable growth, and strong resilience, making it one of the easiest large Nepenthes to grow indoors or in greenhouses. Beyond its ornamental beauty, it also acts as a natural insect trap, helping control small flying pests while adding a captivating tropical statement to any plant display.
