Euphorbia mayuranthii variegata is a stunning and rare succulent from the Euphorbia genus, known for its intricate growth habit and variegated foliage. The plant features upright, branching stems adorned with creamy-white or yellow variegation that contrasts beautifully against a light green base. Its architectural form and unique variegation make it a highly sought-after addition to succulent collections.

Native to Madagascar, this slow-growing Euphorbia thrives in arid and semi-arid conditions, making it highly drought-tolerant. It occasionally produces small, inconspicuous flowers, but its primary appeal lies in its striking variegated stems and sculptural growth.

Care Guide for Euphorbia mayuranthii variegata

1. Light

  • Ideal Conditions: Bright, indirect light to full sun helps maintain the vibrant variegation.
  • Tolerances: Can adapt to moderate light but may lose variegation in low-light conditions.
  • Avoid: Intense, direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, which can cause sunburn.

2. Watering

  • Frequency: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • Method: Water deeply and ensure excellent drainage.
  • Avoid: Overwatering, as the plant is highly susceptible to root rot.

3. Humidity

  • Ideal Levels: Thrives in low humidity, typical of arid environments.
  • Tolerances: Can adapt to average household humidity levels without issue.

4. Temperature

  • Optimal Range: 18–26°C (65–80°F).
  • Avoid: Exposure to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) or frost, as it is not cold-hardy.

5. Soil

  • Type: A well-draining, sandy or gritty soil mix.
  • Best Mix: Use a cactus or succulent potting mix, or combine standard potting soil with sand, perlite, or pumice for improved aeration.

6. Fertiliser

  • Schedule: Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a cactus and succulent fertiliser diluted to half strength.
  • Avoid: Fertilising during the dormant winter months.

7. Pruning

  • Purpose: Remove any dead or damaged stems to maintain the plant's appearance.
  • Method: Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears, and wear gloves to avoid contact with the milky sap, which can irritate the skin.

8. Repotting

  • Frequency: Repot every 2–3 years, or when the plant outgrows its container.
  • Best Time: Spring, when the plant enters its active growth phase.

9. Propagation

  • Method: Propagate via stem cuttings.
    • Take a healthy cutting and allow it to callous for 1–2 days.
    • Plant the cutting in a well-draining soil mix and water sparingly until roots develop.
    • Keep in bright, indirect light during propagation.

10. Common Issues

  • Yellowing Stems: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Loss of Variegation: Insufficient light can cause fading; move to a brighter location.
  • Pests: Watch for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Special Tips

  • Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
  • Handle the plant carefully, as Euphorbia species exude a milky sap that is toxic if ingested and can irritate the skin and eyes.
  • Rotate the plant regularly for even growth and exposure to light.
