Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. Rhipsalis heteroclada is a unique species of epiphytic cactus from the Cactaceae family, native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil. Unlike desert cacti, Rhipsalis thrive in shaded, humid environments where they naturally grow on trees or rocks, absorbing moisture from the air.
This species produces long, trailing stems that branch freely, often cascading up to 1–2 metres in length over time. The stems are cylindrical, fleshy, and jointed, with a bright green tone that matures into a deeper green. Their slightly angular texture and branching habit create a bushy, tangled effect that is highly decorative in hanging baskets or tall planters.
When mature, Rhipsalis heteroclada can produce small, white, star-shaped flowers along the stems, followed by translucent, berry-like fruits. Its cascading growth, combined with the charm of delicate blooms, makes it a popular choice for collectors of tropical cacti.
Prefers bright, indirect light. Unlike desert cacti, this species naturally grows in dappled forest shade, so avoid harsh direct sunlight. It tolerates medium to lower light conditions better than most cacti.
Keep soil lightly moist during the growing season (spring–summer). Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. In winter, reduce watering but do not allow the plant to dry out completely. Ensure pots have good drainage to prevent root rot.
Temperature: Thrives in 18–26°C. Protect from draughts and prolonged cold below 12°C.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity, especially indoors. Mist occasionally or place near other tropical plants to replicate its rainforest habitat.
Use a free-draining, airy mix, such as cactus compost combined with orchid bark and perlite. Hanging baskets and shallow containers suit its trailing habit. Repot every 2–3 years in spring.
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted cactus or houseplant fertiliser. Stop feeding in winter.
Prune to control size and encourage bushier growth. Cuttings root easily in soil or moss, making propagation straightforward.
A moderate to fast grower, producing dense cascades of branching stems. With age, flowering may occur, followed by small translucent berries.
Shrivelling stems: A sign of underwatering or very low humidity.
Yellowing stems: Often caused by overwatering or poorly draining soil.
Pests: May occasionally attract mealybugs or scale insects.
Rhipsalis are sometimes called “mistletoe cacti” due to their growth habit and berry-like fruits. Rhipsalis heteroclada is especially popular for its long, bushy cascades, which bring a soft, jungle-like character to interiors. Unlike many houseplants, it is considered non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for households with cats and dogs.
