Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. Costus megalobractea ‘Variegata’, commonly known as the Variegated Spiral Ginger, is a stunning tropical perennial prized for its bold variegated foliage and elegant, spiralling growth habit. Native to Central and South America, this species belongs to the Costaceae family — close relatives of true gingers (Zingiberaceae) — and is admired for its sculptural form, exotic blooms, and manageable size.
The plant’s lush, lance-shaped leaves feature broad stripes of creamy white, green, and soft yellow, arranged in a graceful spiral around thick, upright stems. New leaves unfurl in perfectly arranged whorls, giving the plant a dynamic, architectural structure. In warm months, it produces striking cone-shaped inflorescences topped with bright red or pink bracts, from which delicate yellow flowers emerge.
With its lush texture, tropical flair, and variegated brilliance, Costus megalobractea ‘Variegata’ is a centrepiece plant that instantly transforms any indoor conservatory, greenhouse, or tropical garden into an exotic paradise.
Thrives in bright, indirect light or dappled sunlight. It can tolerate some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun, which enhances its variegation, but harsh midday light can scorch the leaves. In lower light, growth may slow, and variegation can fade.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm of soil begins to dry. Spiral Ginger appreciates humidity and even moisture, especially during the growing season. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Temperature: Prefers warmth between 22–30 °C; avoid temperatures below 15 °C.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–90%) to thrive. Mist regularly, use a humidifier, or grow in a greenhouse environment to maintain vibrant foliage and lush growth.
Use a rich, well-draining tropical mix composed of compost, perlite, and fine bark or coco coir. The soil should retain gentle moisture but drain freely. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh nutrients and accommodate the plant’s thick rhizomatous roots.
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser or an organic seaweed extract. This encourages strong growth and vibrant colour. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leaf burn or reduce variegation contrast.
Remove old or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant neat and promote new shoots. After flowering, trim spent inflorescences to encourage further blooming. Rotate the plant occasionally to maintain even light exposure and symmetrical growth.
A moderate to fast grower, Costus megalobractea ‘Variegata’ typically reaches 1–1.5 metres in height and 60–90 cm in spread. Under ideal conditions, it produces new shoots regularly and blooms seasonally with its vivid, cone-like bracts. Mature plants form dense, lush clumps of spiralling stems that create an instant tropical effect.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown edges: Low humidity or cold exposure.
Faded variegation: Insufficient light.
Pests: Occasionally spider mites or aphids; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Native to tropical rainforests, Costus megalobractea grows naturally along riverbanks and in humid forest understories, where it benefits from filtered sunlight and constant moisture. The ‘Variegata’ form was selected for its ornamental striped foliage and compact, architectural growth, making it a favourite among tropical plant collectors and landscape designers alike.
In cultivation, it serves as both a decorative statement and a structural plant, suitable for indoor tropical displays, patios, and greenhouses. The spiral arrangement of its stems is not only visually captivating but also demonstrates nature’s mathematical perfection — a living example of the Fibonacci sequence.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Spiral Ginger is also an excellent air-purifying plant, helping to remove toxins while enriching indoor environments with a lush, calming presence.
