Philodendron hederaceum 'Variegated'

Product Description

The Philodendron hederaceum 'Variegated' is a beautiful and highly sought-after climbing houseplant, loved for its elegant heart-shaped leaves splashed with unique patterns of creamy white, soft yellow and green variegation. Every leaf is completely unique, making each plant a one-of-a-kind addition to any indoor plant collection.

This naturally climbing species originates from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, where it grows up trees using aerial roots. When provided with a moss pole or other climbing support, it produces larger, more mature foliage and develops into an impressive vertical feature. It can also be grown as a trailing plant from a shelf or hanging planter, although climbing encourages the best leaf size and overall growth.

As well as being incredibly attractive, Variegated Philodendron hederaceum is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for beginners looking to own a more unusual variegated houseplant. Its combination of graceful growth, low maintenance requirements and striking foliage makes it one of the most rewarding philodendrons to grow.

Why you'll love it

  • Beautiful cream, white and green variegated foliage

  • Every leaf has a unique pattern

  • Can be grown climbing or trailing

  • Fast-growing in the right conditions

  • Easy-care compared with many rare variegated plants

  • Excellent statement plant for homes and offices

Philodendron hederaceum 'Variegated' Care Guide

Light

Philodendron hederaceum 'Variegated' thrives in bright, indirect light.

Variegated plants require more light than their all-green counterparts to maintain healthy growth and vibrant leaf colouring. An east-facing window is ideal, while south or west-facing windows are suitable if the plant is positioned away from harsh afternoon sunshine.

Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the lighter areas of the leaves.

Ideal lighting conditions:

  • Bright, indirect light

  • Gentle morning sun is beneficial

  • Medium light is tolerated but may reduce variegation

  • Avoid strong afternoon sun

Rotate the plant every few weeks to encourage even growth.

Watering

Allow the top 3–5cm of compost to dry out before watering thoroughly.

Water until excess drains from the bottom of the pot and never allow the plant to sit in standing water.

During spring and summer, watering is generally required every 7–10 days, while in winter this may reduce to every 2–3 weeks depending on indoor conditions.

Signs your plant needs watering include:

  • Dry compost

  • Slightly drooping leaves

  • A lighter pot when lifted

Always check the compost before watering rather than sticking to a fixed schedule.

Humidity

Philodendron hederaceum 'Variegated' enjoys moderate to high humidity, ideally between 50% and 70%.

While it adapts well to normal household humidity, higher humidity encourages:

  • Larger leaves

  • Better variegation

  • Faster growth

  • Healthier aerial roots

A humidifier or grouping plants together can help maintain suitable humidity levels.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 28°C.

Avoid temperatures below 15°C, cold draughts and sudden fluctuations.

Feeding

Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half the recommended strength.

Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Avoid overfeeding, particularly with variegated plants, as excess fertiliser can damage the roots.

Soil

Use a chunky, free-draining aroid compost mix.

A suitable blend includes:

  • Peat-free houseplant compost

  • Orchid bark

  • Perlite or pumice

  • Coco chips (optional)

  • Horticultural charcoal (optional)

Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Moss Pole Support

Although it can be grown trailing, Philodendron hederaceum 'Variegated' performs best when allowed to climb.

Providing a moss pole encourages:

  • Larger leaves

  • Shorter internodes

  • Stronger stems

  • More mature growth

Keep the moss pole lightly moist where possible so aerial roots can attach naturally.

Repotting

Repot every 1–2 years, or sooner if roots begin growing through the drainage holes.

Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one.

Spring is the ideal time to repot.

Growth Habit

Philodendron hederaceum 'Variegated' is a vigorous climbing vine.

Given bright light, warmth and a suitable support, it can produce long stems with increasingly larger foliage throughout the growing season.

Its elegant heart-shaped leaves and unpredictable variegation ensure every plant develops its own distinctive appearance.

Pruning

Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves using clean, sharp scissors.

Long stems can be trimmed above a node to encourage bushier growth.

Pruned sections can easily be propagated.

Propagation

Stem cuttings are the easiest method of propagation.

Each cutting should include:

  • At least one healthy node

  • One or more leaves

Root cuttings in water, sphagnum moss or a well-draining propagation mix before potting into compost.

For the best chance of maintaining variegation, ensure the cutting includes a node that already displays variegated growth.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves

Usually caused by:

  • Overwatering

  • Poor drainage

  • Older leaves naturally ageing

Brown leaf edges

Can be caused by:

  • Low humidity

  • Underwatering

  • Fertiliser salt build-up

Flush the compost occasionally with clean water to remove excess fertiliser.

Loss of variegation

Usually caused by:

  • Insufficient light

  • Reversion to green growth

Increase light levels and prune fully green stems if necessary to encourage more variegated growth.

Small leaves or leggy growth

Typically caused by:

  • Low light

  • Lack of climbing support

  • Infrequent feeding during the growing season

Toxicity

Like all Philodendron species, Philodendron hederaceum 'Variegated' is toxic if ingested by humans and pets due to insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.

Keep out of reach of cats, dogs and young children.
