Codiaeum eburneum variegata is a rare and visually striking cultivar of the Croton family (Codiaeum variegatum), cherished for its vibrant, painterly foliage. Native to tropical Asia and the western Pacific, crotons are known for their vividly coloured leaves, and this variety is no exception — blending creamy variegation with deep greens and warm golden undertones.

The leaves are long, narrow, and slightly twisted, displaying bold marbling, streaking, or splashes of cream, yellow, and green. Some may even show tinges of orange or blush pink under strong light. This combination of colour and form gives Codiaeum eburneum variegata a truly tropical, living-art appearance.

Compact yet bushy, this cultivar makes an excellent statement plant for bright interiors, conservatories, or sheltered patios during summer. Its elegant variegation and sculptural habit bring structure and colour wherever it’s placed.

Codiaeum eburneum variegata – Care Guide

Light

Requires bright, indirect light to maintain strong variegation and vibrant leaf colour. Can tolerate some morning or late-afternoon sun but avoid harsh midday rays, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season but never soggy. In winter, reduce watering slightly while ensuring the root ball does not dry out completely.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Thrives in warmth, ideally 18–28°C. Keep away from draughts and cold below 15°C.

  • Humidity: High humidity (60–80%) helps prevent leaf drop and crisping. Mist regularly or use a humidifier, especially in heated indoor environments.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining, peat-free houseplant compost with added perlite or grit for aeration. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh soil and encourage healthy root growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim back leggy stems to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves. Clean leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to enhance their natural sheen.

Growth and Maturity

A moderately fast-growing, upright plant that can reach 60–90 cm indoors. When happy, it forms a full, bushy specimen with rich, consistent variegation.

Common Issues

  • Leaf drop: Often due to sudden temperature changes, low humidity, or relocation shock.

  • Faded variegation: Insufficient light.

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Pests: Occasionally spider mites, thrips, or mealybugs.

Background and Benefits

Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) are renowned for their dazzling foliage and are a staple in tropical horticulture. The eburneum variegata form is more refined and subdued in colour than some crotons, offering a sophisticated mix of cream and green tones that complement modern interiors. It adds year-round colour and is relatively easy to maintain with proper light and humidity.
