Philodendron verrucosum – Imperfect Plant

Philodendron verrucosum is a highly sought-after climbing aroid prized for its velvety heart-shaped leaves, striking light green veining and distinctive reddish undersides. Native to the cloud forests of Central and South America, this beautiful species naturally climbs trees using aerial roots and thrives when provided with support such as a moss pole.

As the plant matures and climbs, the foliage becomes larger and more dramatic, developing the characteristic velvet texture and bold contrasting veins that make Philodendron verrucosum a favourite among collectors.

This specimen is supplied growing on a moss pole to encourage healthy climbing growth and larger leaf development.

Imperfect Plant

This is an imperfect plant and is being offered at a reduced price.

The plant has cosmetic marks and blemishes on some of the leaves, as visible in the product photos. These imperfections may include scarring, mechanical damage, minor tears, blemishes or marks acquired during cultivation and handling.

Please note:

  • The imperfections are cosmetic only.
  • The plant remains healthy and actively growing.
  • New growth should emerge normally when provided with suitable care.
  • You will receive a plant in similar condition to that shown in the photographs.

If you are looking for a perfect display specimen, this plant may not be suitable. However, it offers an excellent opportunity to own this desirable species at a reduced price.

Plant Care Guide

Light

Philodendron verrucosum prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Position near an east or north-facing window.
  • Bright filtered light encourages healthy growth and larger leaves.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the velvety foliage.

Watering

Keep the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged.

  • Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings.
  • Water thoroughly when needed and allow excess water to drain away.
  • Reduce watering during winter.

Humidity

This species thrives in higher humidity levels.

  • Ideal humidity: 60% or above.
  • Benefits from a humidifier or placement amongst other tropical plants.
  • Avoid dry air from radiators and heating vents.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between:

  • 18°C–28°C

Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts.

Soil

A free-draining aroid mix is recommended.

A suitable mix may contain:

  • Houseplant compost
  • Orchid bark
  • Perlite
  • Coco chips

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.

Growth Habit

As a climbing Philodendron, verrucosum will benefit greatly from its moss pole.

  • Attach new growth to the pole as it develops.
  • Keep the moss pole lightly moist where possible.
  • Larger leaves are produced as the plant climbs and matures.
