Epipremnum 'Champs Élysées' on Moss Pole

Product Description

The Epipremnum 'Champs Élysées' is an exceptional and highly sought-after climbing aroid, prized for its elegant foliage and vigorous growth. Trained onto a natural moss pole, this premium specimen has been encouraged to climb, allowing it to produce larger, more mature leaves than trailing plants. The result is a striking vertical display that makes an impressive statement in any home, office or indoor plant collection.

Its glossy, elongated leaves display rich shades of deep green with subtle variegation and texture that become increasingly pronounced as the plant matures. As the plant continues to climb, each new leaf has the potential to grow significantly larger than the last, creating a lush, tropical appearance that becomes more dramatic over time.

Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, Epipremnum species naturally grow by climbing trees in search of brighter light. A moss pole recreates this natural environment, encouraging healthier growth, stronger stems and beautifully oversized foliage.

Whether you're an experienced collector or simply looking for an unusual statement houseplant, the Epipremnum 'Champs Élysées' is a rewarding and relatively easy species to grow.

Why you'll love it

  • Beautiful climbing growth habit

  • Grown on a moss pole for larger, mature foliage

  • Fast-growing under the right conditions

  • Ideal statement plant for bright interiors

  • Easy to care for compared with many rare aroids

  • Can continue climbing as the moss pole is extended

Epipremnum 'Champs Élysées' Care Guide

Light

Epipremnum 'Champs Élysées' thrives in bright, indirect light.

An east-facing window is ideal, while south or west-facing windows work well if the plant is positioned slightly back from direct sun or protected by a sheer curtain.

It will tolerate medium light, but growth will slow and new leaves are likely to remain smaller. Too much direct midday sunlight may scorch the foliage.

Best light conditions:

  • Bright indirect light

  • Gentle morning sun is beneficial

  • Avoid prolonged strong afternoon sun

  • Rotate the plant every few weeks for even growth

Watering

Water when the top 3–5cm of compost has dried out.

Allow excess water to drain away completely and never leave the pot standing in water, as consistently wet roots can lead to root rot.

During spring and summer, watering is typically needed every 7–10 days depending on temperature and humidity. During winter this may reduce to every 2–3 weeks.

Signs the plant needs watering include:

  • Slightly softer leaves

  • Dry compost

  • Slower growth during active season

Avoid watering to a schedule—always check the compost first.

Humidity

As a tropical rainforest plant, Epipremnum appreciates moderate to high humidity.

While it adapts well to average household conditions, humidity levels above 50–60% encourage larger leaves, healthier aerial roots and stronger climbing growth.

Increase humidity by:

  • Using a humidifier

  • Grouping plants together

  • Placing the plant in naturally humid rooms such as kitchens or bathrooms (with sufficient light)

Avoid placing the plant next to radiators or air-conditioning vents.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures are between 18°C and 28°C.

Avoid temperatures below 15°C, cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, as these can slow growth and damage the foliage.

Feeding

Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half the recommended strength.

Reduce feeding during autumn and stop almost entirely during winter when growth naturally slows.

Avoid overfeeding, as excessive fertiliser can damage the roots.

Moss Pole Care

The moss pole plays an important role in helping your Epipremnum mature.

Keep the moss pole slightly damp where possible. Moist moss encourages the aerial roots to grow into the pole, allowing the plant to anchor itself and produce increasingly larger leaves.

As your plant grows:

  • Tie new stems loosely to the pole if required.

  • Keep extending the pole as the plant reaches the top.

  • Maintain light moisture within the moss without making it soaking wet.

A well-maintained moss pole often results in noticeably larger, more mature foliage than plants left trailing.

Soil

Use a chunky, free-draining aroid compost mix.

A suitable mix includes:

  • Houseplant compost

  • Orchid bark

  • Perlite or pumice

  • Coco chips (optional)

  • Horticultural charcoal (optional)

Good drainage is essential for healthy root development.

Repotting

Repot approximately every 1–2 years, or when roots begin growing from the drainage holes.

Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one, as oversized pots retain excess moisture.

Spring is the ideal time for repotting.

Growth Habit

Epipremnum 'Champs Élysées' is a climbing plant rather than a trailing species.

Given warmth, bright light and a supportive moss pole, it can grow quickly throughout the growing season.

As it matures, leaves become:

  • Larger

  • Thicker

  • More textured

  • More dramatic in appearance

Regularly guiding new growth onto the moss pole will encourage the best results.

Pruning

Remove any damaged or yellowing leaves using clean, sharp scissors.

If stems become too long, they can be pruned above a node to encourage branching.

Healthy stem cuttings can also be propagated.

Propagation

Propagation is simple using stem cuttings.

Cut below a node ensuring each cutting has:

  • At least one node

  • One healthy leaf

Root cuttings in water, sphagnum moss or a chunky propagation mix before potting into soil.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves

Usually caused by:

  • Overwatering

  • Poor drainage

  • Natural ageing of older leaves

Brown leaf edges

Often caused by:

  • Low humidity

  • Underwatering

  • Fertiliser build-up

Flush the compost occasionally with clean water to remove excess salts.

Small new leaves

Usually indicates:

  • Insufficient light

  • Lack of support

  • Dry moss pole

  • Lack of feeding during the growing season

Leggy growth

Typically caused by low light levels.

Move the plant to a brighter location while avoiding harsh direct sunlight.

Toxicity

Like other Epipremnum species, Epipremnum 'Champs Élysées' is toxic if ingested by pets and humans due to insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.

Keep out of reach of cats, dogs and young children.
