Calathea Flamestar (Goeppertia 'Flamestar') – Detailed Description

Calathea Flamestar is a spectacular tropical houseplant renowned for its dramatic foliage, bold patterns and luxurious appearance. A member of the Marantaceae family, this striking variety features large, elongated leaves with rich green backgrounds decorated by sweeping feather-like bands of lime green and silvery cream. The deep burgundy-purple undersides provide a beautiful contrast, making the plant just as impressive from every angle.

The intricate foliage gives Calathea Flamestar a vibrant, almost hand-painted appearance, making it an eye-catching centrepiece in any indoor plant collection. Like other prayer plants, its leaves gently rise in the evening and lower again during the day in response to changing light levels, adding movement and character to your home.

Native to the tropical forests of South America, Calathea Flamestar naturally grows beneath the rainforest canopy, where it enjoys filtered light, consistently moist soil and high humidity. These conditions make it particularly well suited to bright bathrooms, kitchens, conservatories with filtered light and living spaces where humidity can be maintained.

With proper care, Calathea Flamestar forms a dense, upright clump of lush foliage, typically reaching 60–90cm tall and around 50–70cm wide, creating a stunning tropical display all year round.

Calathea Flamestar Care Guide

Light

Calathea Flamestar thrives in bright, indirect light.

Place it near an east or north-facing window, or position it a short distance back from a bright south or west-facing window where direct sunlight is filtered.

Avoid direct sun, as it can scorch the leaves, fade the vibrant markings and cause crispy brown edges.

While it tolerates moderate light levels, brighter indirect light encourages stronger growth and more vivid leaf colouring.

Best location: Bright room with filtered, indirect light.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist but never saturated.

Water thoroughly when the top 2–3cm of compost feels dry, allowing any excess water to drain away completely.

Never allow the compost to dry out completely, as this can cause the leaves to curl and become crispy.

During autumn and winter, reduce watering slightly while still keeping the soil lightly moist.

Calatheas are sensitive to minerals, fluoride and chlorine commonly found in tap water, so rainwater, filtered water or distilled water is recommended where possible.

Humidity

High humidity is essential for healthy foliage.

Aim for humidity levels of at least 60%, with 70% or higher producing the best results.

To increase humidity:

  • Use a humidifier.

  • Place the plant on a pebble tray filled with water (without the pot sitting directly in the water).

  • Group it with other houseplants.

  • Grow it in naturally humid rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens.

Low humidity is the most common cause of brown leaf tips and edges.

Temperature

Calathea Flamestar prefers temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.

Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 15°C.

Protect it from:

  • Cold draughts

  • Air conditioning units

  • Radiators

  • Sudden temperature changes

Warm, stable conditions encourage healthy growth throughout the year.

Soil

Use a moisture-retentive but free-draining potting mix.

A suitable mix includes:

  • Quality houseplant compost

  • Coco coir or peat-free compost

  • Perlite

  • Fine orchid bark

This provides the balance of moisture retention and airflow needed for healthy roots.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength.

Avoid overfeeding, as Calatheas are sensitive to fertiliser build-up.

No feeding is usually necessary during autumn and winter.

Growth

Calathea Flamestar is a moderate grower.

Under ideal indoor conditions it typically reaches:

  • Height: 60–90cm

  • Spread: 50–70cm

New leaves emerge tightly rolled before gradually unfurling to reveal their vibrant patterns.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years, or sooner if the plant becomes root-bound.

The best time to repot is during spring.

Choose a pot only one size larger than the current container to avoid excessive moisture retention.

Refresh the compost to replenish nutrients and improve drainage.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required.

Simply remove:

  • Yellow or ageing leaves

  • Brown or damaged foliage

  • Dead stems at the base

Always use clean, sharp scissors or secateurs.

Propagation

Calathea Flamestar is best propagated by division.

When repotting:

  • Carefully remove the plant from its pot.

  • Separate healthy clumps with their own roots.

  • Pot each division into fresh compost.

  • Water thoroughly and keep in warm, humid conditions until established.

Division is the quickest and most reliable propagation method.

Common Problems

Brown Leaf Tips

Usually caused by:

  • Low humidity

  • Dry indoor air

  • Hard tap water

  • Underwatering

Increase humidity and use filtered or rainwater if possible.

Yellow Leaves

Most commonly caused by:

  • Overwatering

  • Poor drainage

  • Waterlogged compost

Allow the top layer of compost to dry slightly before watering again.

Curling Leaves

Usually indicates:

  • Dry soil

  • Low humidity

  • Cold temperatures

Check watering, humidity and room temperature.

Faded Leaf Colours

Typically caused by excessive direct sunlight.

Move the plant to bright, indirect light.

Drooping Leaves

Natural movement throughout the day is normal.

Persistent drooping may indicate:

  • Inconsistent watering

  • Temperature stress

  • Root problems

Check growing conditions and watering routine.

Toxicity

Calathea Flamestar is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet-friendly homes.
