Calathea Jungle Velvet (Calathea warscewiczii) – Detailed Description

Calathea Jungle Velvet is one of the most luxurious foliage plants available, prized for its rich, velvety leaves and elegant tropical appearance. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this stunning plant features deep emerald green leaves with striking light green feather-like markings running along each side of the central vein. The undersides of the leaves reveal a beautiful burgundy-purple colour, adding extra interest when the foliage moves throughout the day.

The soft, velvet-like texture of the leaves gives Calathea Jungle Velvet its distinctive appearance and makes it a standout among other prayer plants. Like all members of the Marantaceae family, the leaves gently raise in the evening and lower again during the day in response to light, earning it the nickname "Prayer Plant."

Perfect for adding texture and colour to living rooms, bedrooms, offices or bathrooms, Calathea Jungle Velvet thrives in warm, humid conditions and brings an instant tropical feel to any indoor space. Although it appreciates a little more care than some houseplants, the reward is a truly spectacular display of lush foliage throughout the year.

With the right conditions, Calathea Jungle Velvet can grow into a full, bushy plant reaching around 60–100cm tall, making it an excellent statement plant without becoming overwhelmingly large.

Calathea Jungle Velvet Care Guide

Light

Calathea Jungle Velvet prefers bright, indirect light.

Place it near an east or north-facing window, or a few feet back from a bright south or west-facing window where the light is filtered.

Avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch the velvety leaves, fade their rich colouring and cause crispy edges.

Too little light may slow growth and reduce the contrast of the leaf patterns.

Best location: Bright room with filtered light.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Water thoroughly once the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry, allowing excess water to drain away completely.

Calatheas dislike drying out completely, but equally dislike sitting in soggy compost.

During winter, reduce watering slightly while still ensuring the soil doesn't become completely dry.

As Calatheas can be sensitive to minerals and chlorine found in tap water, filtered, rainwater or distilled water is often beneficial, particularly if brown leaf edges begin to appear.

Humidity

High humidity is essential for keeping Calathea Jungle Velvet looking its best.

Aim for humidity levels above 60%, although higher levels will encourage healthier growth and reduce brown leaf edges.

Ways to increase humidity include:

  • Using a humidifier

  • Grouping plants together

  • Placing the plant in naturally humid rooms such as bathrooms

  • Positioning it on a pebble tray filled with water (without the pot sitting directly in water)

Dry household air is the most common cause of crispy leaf edges.

Temperature

Calathea Jungle Velvet enjoys warm, stable temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.

Avoid temperatures below 15°C, as cold conditions can damage the foliage.

Keep away from:

  • Radiators

  • Air conditioning units

  • Open windows during winter

  • Cold draughts

Consistency is key, as sudden temperature fluctuations can stress the plant.

Soil

Use a free-draining yet moisture-retentive potting mix.

A good mix contains:

  • Houseplant compost

  • Coco coir or peat-free compost

  • Perlite

  • Fine orchid bark

This provides moisture retention while allowing plenty of air around the roots.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.

Avoid overfeeding, as Calatheas are sensitive to fertiliser salts which can damage the roots.

Do not feed during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Growth

Calathea Jungle Velvet is a moderately fast grower when provided with warmth, humidity and consistent moisture.

Mature plants typically reach:

  • Height: 60–100cm

  • Spread: 50–80cm

New leaves emerge tightly rolled before gradually unfurling into their full velvety beauty.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years or whenever roots begin growing through the drainage holes.

Spring is the ideal time to repot.

Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one, as oversized pots retain excess moisture that may lead to root rot.

Refresh the compost even if moving into the same pot to replenish nutrients.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

Simply remove:

  • Yellow leaves

  • Brown or damaged foliage

  • Old stems at the base using clean scissors

Regular removal of older leaves encourages fresh growth.

Propagation

Calathea Jungle Velvet is propagated by division.

When repotting:

  • Carefully remove the plant from its pot.

  • Separate healthy clumps with their own roots.

  • Replant each division into fresh compost.

  • Water thoroughly and keep warm while new roots establish.

Division is the easiest and most reliable propagation method.

Common Problems

Brown Leaf Edges

Usually caused by:

  • Low humidity

  • Dry air

  • Hard tap water

  • Underwatering

Increase humidity and consider using filtered water.

Yellow Leaves

Often caused by:

  • Overwatering

  • Poor drainage

  • Waterlogged compost

Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again.

Curling Leaves

Usually indicates:

  • Thirst

  • Low humidity

  • Cold temperatures

Check soil moisture and environmental conditions.

Faded Leaf Colour

Generally caused by excessive direct sunlight.

Move the plant into bright, indirect light.

Drooping Leaves

Temporary drooping after watering or during the evening can be normal due to the plant's natural movement.

Persistent drooping may indicate watering issues or temperature stress.

Toxicity

Calathea Jungle Velvet is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it an excellent choice for pet-friendly homes.
