Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret’ is one of the most extraordinary foliage plants in the Alocasia genus. Its thick, highly glossy leaves have an almost metallic, lacquered appearance, shifting between deep burgundy, copper and dark green depending on the light.

The rounded, shield-like foliage looks almost artificial due to its intense sheen and pronounced veining. Compact and slow-growing, ‘Red Secret’ is a true collector’s plant and makes a dramatic statement in smaller spaces.

Key Features

  • 🌿 Metallic copper to burgundy foliage

  • 🌿 Highly glossy, almost mirror-like leaves

  • 🌿 Deeply textured veining

  • 🌿 Compact and architectural

  • 🌿 Rare and collector-focused variety

Care Guide

Light

Bright, indirect light is essential.

  • East-facing or bright north-facing windows are ideal

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch leaves

  • Too little light dulls colour and slows growth

Bright, filtered light enhances its metallic sheen.

Watering

Alocasia cuprea prefers consistent but careful watering.

  • Allow the top 2–3cm of soil to dry before watering

  • Keep soil lightly moist during active growth

  • Reduce watering significantly in winter

Important:

  • Ensure excellent drainage

  • Never allow it to sit in water

Overwatering is the most common cause of failure.

Humidity

High humidity helps maintain healthy foliage.

  • Ideal range: 60–80%

  • Benefits greatly from a humidifier

  • Avoid dry air from heating

Low humidity can cause browning edges or leaf curling.

Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–26°C

  • Avoid temperatures below 16°C

  • Protect from draughts and sudden temperature changes

Stable warmth is key for this tropical species.

Soil & Potting Mix

Use a chunky, well-draining mix:

  • Peat-free houseplant compost

  • Perlite

  • Orchid bark

Good airflow around the roots prevents rot.

Feeding

Feed during spring and summer:

  • Balanced liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks

  • Reduce feeding in autumn

  • Do not feed during winter dormancy

It is a slow grower and does not require heavy feeding.

Growth Habit

  • Upright and compact

  • Typically grows 30–40cm tall

  • Thick leaves emerge from a central rhizome

Growth is slower compared to many other Alocasias.

Dormancy

May slow down or partially go dormant in cooler months.

  • Reduce watering

  • Keep warm and bright

  • Avoid fertilising

Some leaf loss in winter can occur if conditions drop.

Propagation

Best propagated via rhizome division during spring repotting.

This is typically done by experienced growers.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves

  • Overwatering

Soft stems or base

  • Root rot

Brown edges

  • Low humidity

Leaf drop

  • Temperature stress or dormancy

Styling Ideas

  • Perfect for dark, moody interiors

  • Looks stunning in black, metallic or neutral pots

  • Ideal for plant cabinets

  • Pairs beautifully with textured foliage plants

Its metallic sheen makes it a standout specimen in any rare plant collection.

Toxicity

Like other Alocasias, it is toxic if ingested by pets or humans. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.

Tropical Glasshouse Nursery: Our plants are nurtured in our tropical glasshouse nursery located in Lincolnshire, where we maintain an average temperature of 16°C. We do not use cold warehouses, ensuring optimal conditions for plant health.

Plastic Nursery Pots: All our plants are supplied in practical plastic nursery pots. If you prefer a more decorative option, we offer a range of stylish pots available for purchase separately.

Non-Consumable: Please note that our plants are intended for ornamental purposes only unless specifically stated as edible. Ensure you check product descriptions carefully if you are looking for edible varieties.

Variable Heights: The height of our plants can vary by approximately +/- 10%. This natural fluctuation ensures you receive a unique and healthy specimen.

Plant Pot Sizes: Pot sizes may vary by approximately +/- 1cm. To ensure a proper fit, we recommend selecting a decorative pot that is 1-2cm larger than the stated plant pot size. For instance, if you purchase a plant in a 17cm pot, a 18 - 19cm decorative pot would be ideal.

Quarantining: All our houseplants are regularly sprayed with a preventative systemic bug treatment. We do our best to ensure a bug free growing environment however sometimes these can unfortunately be missed, as such we always recommend quarantining plants when they first enter your home and checking them upon arrival for bugs.
