Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek’, commonly called the Green Velvet Alocasia or Alocasia Frydek, is a striking tropical houseplant from the rainforests of the Philippines. This stunning variety is prized for its velvety, deep green foliage and contrasting white veins, which give it a sophisticated, almost jewel-like appearance.
Each arrow-shaped leaf is rich and dark, with a soft, velvety texture that catches the light beautifully. The bold, silvery-white veins create a striking contrast, emphasising the geometric shape and symmetry of the leaves. Compact yet dramatic, Alocasia Frydek makes an excellent statement plant for bright interiors, conservatories, or tropical plant displays.
A true collector’s favourite, ‘Frydek’ combines elegance, exotic texture, and manageable size, offering the drama of an Alocasia with relatively easy care when its basic needs are met.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its velvety leaves, and deep shade, which may slow growth and dull the leaf colour. East- or north-facing windows are ideal.
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Alocasia Frydek dislikes sitting in water but should not be allowed to dry out completely. During winter dormancy, reduce watering slightly while keeping the soil lightly moist.
Temperature: Prefers warmth, 20–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 16°C.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–80%). Mist regularly, place near a humidifier, or use a pebble tray to prevent the leaf edges from crisping.
Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix, such as peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. This ensures good airflow and moisture retention without waterlogging. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the mix and promote strong growth.
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support foliage development. Do not feed during winter when growth slows.
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to maintain appearance and prevent disease. Wipe the velvety leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and preserve their natural sheen.
A moderate grower, typically reaching 50–70 cm tall indoors. New leaves emerge regularly in warm, bright conditions, each larger and more detailed than the last.
Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Leaf droop or dormancy: Normal in winter months; water less and resume regular care once new growth appears.
Pests: Occasionally spider mites or thrips — maintain humidity and clean leaves to deter infestations.
Native to the tropical forests of the Philippines, Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek’ is one of the most visually captivating members of the Alocasia genus. Its velvety foliage and contrasting veins make it a standout in any collection.
Despite its exotic appearance, ‘Frydek’ is manageable indoors when provided with warmth, moisture, and light. It’s an excellent plant for those who love rare tropicals and want to create a lush, jungle-inspired aesthetic.
