Anthurium warocqueanum, commonly known as the Queen Anthurium, is one of the most iconic velvet-leaf species in the Anthurium family.

It is celebrated for its exceptionally long, dramatic, pendulous leaves that can reach impressive lengths in ideal conditions. The foliage is deep green to near-black, velvety in texture, with bold silvery-white veins running along its length.

Elegant, rare and highly sought-after, Anthurium warocqueanum is considered a true collector’s plant and thrives best in stable, high-humidity environments.

Key Features

  • 🌿 Long, pendant velvet leaves

  • 🌿 Bright silver-white veining

  • 🌿 Deep green to near-black mature foliage

  • 🌿 Highly architectural and dramatic

  • 🌿 Rare and collector-focused species

Care Guide

Light

Bright, indirect light is essential.

  • Ideal near east-facing windows

  • Avoid direct sunlight

  • Too little light can reduce leaf size and slow growth

Filtered light enhances the velvety texture and vein contrast.

Watering

Allow the top 3–4cm of soil to dry slightly before watering.

  • Keep soil lightly moist during active growth

  • Reduce watering in cooler months

  • Never allow roots to sit in water

Consistency is key — it dislikes being allowed to fully dry out.

Humidity

High humidity is crucial for healthy growth.

  • Ideal range: 70–80%

  • Highly benefits from a humidifier

  • Excellent candidate for plant cabinets or controlled environments

Low humidity may cause:

  • Browning leaf tips

  • Curling

  • Smaller leaves

Temperature

  • Ideal: 18–26°C

  • Avoid temperatures below 16°C

  • Protect from draughts

Stable warmth supports steady growth.

Soil & Potting Mix

Use a chunky, airy aroid mix:

  • Peat-free houseplant compost

  • Orchid bark

  • Perlite

  • Horticultural charcoal

Excellent aeration prevents root rot and supports healthy growth.

Feeding

Feed during spring and summer:

  • Balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks

  • Use diluted strength

  • Avoid heavy feeding

Velvet Anthuriums are sensitive to salt build-up.

Growth Habit

  • Upright growth from a central stem

  • Leaves lengthen dramatically with maturity

  • Slow to moderate growth rate

Mature specimens can produce leaves well over 60cm long in ideal conditions.

Propagation

Best propagated by division when offsets form.

This is typically done by experienced growers during repotting.

Common Problems

Brown leaf tips

  • Low humidity

Yellow leaves

  • Overwatering

Drooping or soft base

  • Root rot

Small or short leaves

  • Insufficient humidity or light

Stability is key — sudden environmental changes can cause stress.

Styling Ideas

  • Perfect as a dramatic focal point

  • Ideal for plant cabinets

  • Looks stunning in minimalist interiors

  • Pairs beautifully with compact velvet Anthuriums

Its long, elegant foliage creates a truly regal presence.

Toxicity

Like other Anthuriums, it is toxic if ingested by pets or humans. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
