Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' is a rare species begonia originating from the tropical rainforests of Sarawak, Borneo. Highly prized by collectors, it is admired for its spectacular foliage, which combines deep emerald-green leaves with striking iridescent blue highlights that shimmer when viewed from different angles. This unique structural iridescence is a natural adaptation that allows the plant to maximise light absorption in the dim rainforest understory.

The rounded to slightly elongated leaves often feature prominent veining and a soft, velvety texture, creating an elegant contrast between dark green and metallic blue hues. As the plant matures, it forms a compact clump of increasingly large foliage, making it an exceptional focal point for terrariums, plant cabinets or tropical indoor collections.

Due to its rainforest origins, Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' thrives in warm temperatures, consistently high humidity and bright, indirect light. While it requires slightly more specialised care than common begonias, its extraordinary foliage makes it one of the most rewarding species for collectors.

Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' Care Guide

Light

Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' naturally grows beneath dense rainforest canopies.

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal.
  • Medium light is tolerated but growth may slow.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage and reduce the beautiful iridescent effect.
  • Gentle filtered light helps maintain the plant's rich colouring.

A bright terrarium, plant cabinet or east-facing window is ideal.

Watering

Keep the compost consistently lightly moist but never saturated.

Allow only the top 1–2cm of compost to dry before watering again.

During spring and summer:

  • Water approximately every 5–7 days, depending on humidity and temperature.

During autumn and winter:

  • Water slightly less frequently while preventing the compost from drying out completely.

Always ensure excess water drains freely.

Signs of overwatering

  • Yellowing leaves
  • Soft stems
  • Root rot
  • Leaf drop

Signs of underwatering

  • Crispy leaf edges
  • Wilting
  • Curling leaves
  • Slowed growth

Humidity

High humidity is essential for this species.

Ideal humidity:

  • 70–90%

Plants grown below 60% humidity may develop brown leaf edges or struggle to produce healthy new growth.

To provide ideal conditions:

  • Grow in a plant cabinet.
  • Use a humidifier.
  • Keep in a well-ventilated terrarium.
  • Group with other tropical plants.

Good airflow is equally important to help prevent fungal diseases.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures:

20°C–27°C

Avoid temperatures below:

16°C

Protect from:

  • Cold draughts
  • Sudden temperature changes
  • Air conditioning
  • Heating vents

Warm, stable conditions are essential.

Soil

Use a loose, airy and moisture-retentive substrate.

An ideal mix includes:

  • Fine orchid bark
  • Perlite
  • Coco coir
  • High-quality houseplant compost
  • Sphagnum moss

The substrate should retain moisture while allowing excellent drainage and airflow around the roots.

Feeding

Feed during active growth.

  • Every 3–4 weeks throughout spring and summer.
  • Use a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength.
  • Stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Avoid overfeeding, which may damage the roots.

Repotting

Repot every:

  • 1–2 years
  • Or when the growing medium begins to break down.

Only increase the pot size slightly, as begonias generally prefer a snug root system.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required.

Simply:

  • Remove damaged or ageing leaves.
  • Cut away spent flower stalks.
  • Remove dead foliage to improve airflow.

Always use sterilised tools.

Cleaning

The delicate foliage should be handled carefully.

  • Remove dust using a soft artist's brush.
  • Avoid wiping the leaves vigorously.
  • Never use leaf shine products.

Maintaining clean foliage helps preserve the plant's natural iridescence.

Propagation

Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' can be propagated by:

  • Rhizome division
  • Leaf cuttings
  • Leaf section cuttings

Propagation is most successful during spring and summer.

Common Problems

Brown Leaf Edges

Usually caused by:

  • Low humidity
  • Underwatering
  • Dry indoor air

Increase humidity and maintain consistent moisture.

Yellow Leaves

Often indicate:

  • Overwatering
  • Poor drainage
  • Cold conditions

Allow the compost to dry slightly between waterings and ensure excellent drainage.

Powdery Mildew

May develop if:

  • Humidity is high without adequate ventilation.

Improve airflow and remove affected foliage promptly.

Dull Leaf Colour

Usually caused by:

  • Insufficient light

Move the plant to a brighter position with filtered light to enhance its natural iridescence.

Pests

Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' may occasionally attract:

  • Spider mites
  • Mealybugs
  • Aphids
  • Fungus gnats

Inspect regularly, particularly around new growth and leaf undersides.

Is Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' Pet Friendly?

No.

Like all begonias, Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals.

Symptoms may include:

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Mouth irritation
  • Difficulty swallowing

Keep out of reach of pets and young children.

Flowering

Mature plants may occasionally produce:

  • Small white to pale pink flowers.
  • Blooms generally appear during spring or summer.

The flowers are delicate but are secondary to the spectacular foliage.

Growth Habit

Begonia 'Jalau Type 2' has a compact, rhizomatous growth habit.

It is ideal for:

  • Plant cabinets
  • Terrariums
  • Shelves
  • Rare plant collections
  • Decorative indoor pots

Most mature plants reach approximately 20–30cm tall, gradually forming a dense clump of iridescent foliage.
