Begonia 'Midnight Sun' is a striking ornamental foliage begonia prized for its rich, dramatic colouring and beautifully textured leaves. This stunning cultivar features deep burgundy to near-black foliage highlighted with metallic silver, bronze or crimson tones, creating a glowing effect that inspired its name. The leaves often display intricate veining and a velvety finish, while the undersides are typically a rich crimson red.

Grown primarily for its spectacular foliage, Begonia 'Midnight Sun' forms a compact, bushy plant that provides year-round colour and texture. It is ideal for shelves, desks, plant cabinets and decorative pots, where its dark foliage creates a striking contrast against lighter green houseplants.

Like many rex and rhizomatous begonias, Begonia 'Midnight Sun' thrives in warm, humid conditions with bright, indirect light and careful watering.

Begonia 'Midnight Sun' Care Guide

Light

Begonia 'Midnight Sun' thrives in bright, indirect light.

  • Bright filtered light encourages the richest leaf colour and compact growth.
  • Medium light is tolerated but may reduce the intensity of the foliage colours.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, particularly during the afternoon, as this can scorch the delicate leaves.

A position near an east-facing window or a bright room with filtered sunlight is ideal.

Watering

Keep the compost lightly moist while allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings.

Allow the top 2–3cm of compost to dry before watering thoroughly.

During spring and summer:

  • Water approximately every 7–10 days, depending on temperature and humidity.

During autumn and winter:

  • Reduce watering, allowing the compost to dry a little more before watering again.

Always allow excess water to drain away and avoid leaving the plant standing in water.

Signs of overwatering

  • Yellow leaves
  • Soft stems
  • Root rot
  • Leaf drop

Signs of underwatering

  • Brown, crispy leaf edges
  • Wilting
  • Dry compost
  • Reduced growth

Humidity

Begonia 'Midnight Sun' enjoys moderate to high humidity.

Ideal humidity:

  • 50–70%

Higher humidity helps maintain healthy foliage and prevents dry leaf margins.

To increase humidity:

  • Use a humidifier.
  • Group with other tropical houseplants.
  • Place the pot on a pebble tray filled with water.

Avoid misting directly onto the leaves, as prolonged moisture can encourage fungal diseases.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures:

18°C–24°C

Avoid temperatures below:

15°C

Protect from:

  • Cold draughts
  • Sudden temperature fluctuations
  • Radiators
  • Air conditioning vents

Soil

Use a light, airy and well-draining compost.

A suitable mix includes:

  • Houseplant compost
  • Perlite
  • Orchid bark
  • Coco coir

The compost should retain light moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Feeding

Feed during active growth.

  • Every 4–6 weeks throughout spring and summer.
  • Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength.
  • Stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Repotting

Repot every:

  • 1–2 years
  • Or when the roots become crowded.

Choose a pot only slightly larger than the existing one.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required.

Simply:

  • Remove damaged or yellowing leaves.
  • Cut away spent flower stalks.
  • Remove dead foliage to improve airflow.

Always use clean, sterilised scissors.

Cleaning

The textured foliage should be cleaned carefully.

  • Remove dust with a soft brush or dry microfibre cloth.
  • Avoid rubbing the leaves too firmly.
  • Never use leaf shine products.

Propagation

Begonia 'Midnight Sun' can be propagated by:

  • Leaf cuttings
  • Leaf section cuttings
  • Rhizome division (on mature plants)

Propagation is best carried out during spring or early summer.

Common Problems

Brown Leaf Edges

Usually caused by:

  • Low humidity
  • Underwatering
  • Dry indoor air

Increase humidity and maintain consistent watering.

Yellow Leaves

Often caused by:

  • Overwatering
  • Poor drainage
  • Cold conditions

Allow the compost to dry slightly between waterings and ensure excellent drainage.

Powdery Mildew

May occur if:

  • Humidity is high but airflow is poor.

Remove affected foliage and improve ventilation around the plant.

Faded Leaf Colour

Usually indicates:

  • Insufficient light

Move the plant to a brighter position with filtered light.

Pests

Begonia 'Midnight Sun' may occasionally attract:

  • Spider mites
  • Mealybugs
  • Aphids
  • Fungus gnats (if the compost remains consistently wet)

Inspect the foliage regularly and treat any infestations promptly.

Is Begonia 'Midnight Sun' Pet Friendly?

No.

Like all begonias, Begonia 'Midnight Sun' is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals.

Symptoms may include:

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Mouth irritation
  • Difficulty swallowing

Keep out of reach of pets and young children.

Flowering

Although grown primarily for its foliage, mature plants may produce:

  • Small clusters of pale pink or white flowers.
  • Blooms typically appear during spring and summer.

Many growers remove the flowers to encourage the plant to concentrate on producing larger, healthier leaves.

Growth Habit

Begonia 'Midnight Sun' has a compact, bushy growth habit.

It is ideal for:

  • Shelves
  • Desks
  • Plant cabinets
  • Decorative indoor pots
  • Tropical foliage collections

Most mature plants reach approximately 20–35cm tall and wide, making them perfect for compact indoor displays.
