Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' is a stunning ornamental foliage begonia prized for its dramatic leaf colour, intricate patterns and compact growth habit. Its large, textured leaves display an eye-catching blend of deep green, silver and burgundy tones, often accented with dark veining and a rich red underside. As the plant matures, the foliage becomes even more striking, making it a true statement piece for any indoor plant collection.

Like many rex-type begonias, Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' is grown primarily for its spectacular foliage rather than its flowers. Its compact size makes it ideal for shelves, desks, terrariums, plant cabinets and bright indoor spaces where its intricate leaf patterns can be appreciated up close.

Although it appreciates slightly higher humidity than some houseplants, Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' is relatively easy to care for when provided with bright, indirect light and careful watering.

Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' Care Guide

Light

Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' thrives in bright, indirect light.

  • Bright filtered light encourages the best leaf colour and compact growth.
  • Tolerates medium light but may lose some of its vibrant colouring.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the middle of the day, as it can scorch the delicate leaves.

An east-facing window or a position a short distance from a south- or west-facing window is ideal.

Watering

Keep the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Allow the top 2–3cm of soil to dry slightly before watering again.

During spring and summer:

  • Water when the surface begins to dry, typically every 7–10 days depending on conditions.

During autumn and winter:

  • Water less frequently, allowing slightly more drying between waterings.

Always water at the base of the plant where possible, avoiding prolonged moisture on the leaves, which can encourage fungal issues.

Signs of overwatering

  • Yellowing leaves
  • Soft stems
  • Mushy roots
  • Leaf drop

Signs of underwatering

  • Crispy leaf edges
  • Wilting
  • Dry compost
  • Slowed growth

Humidity

Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' enjoys moderate to high humidity.

Ideal humidity:

  • 50–70%

Higher humidity helps maintain healthy foliage and reduces crispy leaf edges.

To increase humidity:

  • Use a humidifier.
  • Group with other houseplants.
  • Place on a pebble tray filled with water.

Avoid misting directly onto the leaves, as this may encourage fungal diseases.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures range from:

18°C–24°C

Avoid temperatures below:

15°C

Protect from:

  • Cold draughts
  • Sudden temperature fluctuations
  • Radiators and heating vents

Soil

Use a light, airy and well-draining compost.

A suitable mix includes:

  • Houseplant compost
  • Perlite
  • Orchid bark
  • Coco coir

Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Feeding

Feed during active growth:

  • Every 4–6 weeks throughout spring and summer.
  • Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.
  • Stop feeding during winter.

Repotting

Repot every:

  • 1–2 years
  • Or when the roots begin to outgrow the pot.

Choose a container only slightly larger than the existing one to avoid retaining excess moisture.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is required.

Simply:

  • Remove damaged or yellowing leaves.
  • Trim away old flower stalks if they appear.
  • Remove dead foliage to improve airflow.

Cleaning

The textured leaves can collect dust over time.

Gently:

  • Dust with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth.
  • Avoid excessive rubbing, which can damage the delicate leaf surface.

Do not use leaf shine products.

Propagation

Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' can be propagated by:

  • Leaf cuttings
  • Leaf section cuttings
  • Rhizome division (if mature)

Leaf propagation is slow but rewarding and commonly used for rex begonias.

Common Problems

Crispy Leaf Edges

Usually caused by:

  • Low humidity
  • Underwatering
  • Dry indoor air

Increase humidity and maintain consistent watering.

Yellow Leaves

Often caused by:

  • Overwatering
  • Poor drainage
  • Cold conditions

Allow the compost to partially dry before watering again.

Powdery Mildew

May occur if:

  • Air circulation is poor.
  • Humidity is high without adequate ventilation.

Remove affected leaves and improve airflow around the plant.

Faded Leaf Colour

Usually indicates:

  • Insufficient light

Move to a brighter location with indirect light.

Pests

Begonias may occasionally attract:

  • Mealybugs
  • Spider mites
  • Aphids
  • Fungus gnats (if compost remains too wet)

Inspect regularly and treat promptly with insecticidal soap or a suitable houseplant treatment if necessary.

Is Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' Pet Friendly?

No.

Begonias are considered toxic to cats and dogs. The tubers and roots contain the highest concentration of calcium oxalates, although all parts of the plant may cause irritation if eaten.

Symptoms may include:

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Mouth irritation
  • Difficulty swallowing

Keep out of reach of pets and young children.

Flowering

Although grown mainly for its foliage, mature plants may occasionally produce:

  • Small clusters of pale pink or white flowers.
  • Flowers usually appear during spring or summer.

Many growers remove the flowers to allow the plant to focus its energy on producing its spectacular foliage.

Growth Habit

Begonia 'Mila's Miracle' has a compact, bushy growth habit.

It is ideal for:

  • Shelves
  • Desks
  • Plant cabinets
  • Terrariums (with good airflow)
  • Decorative indoor containers

Most plants reach around 20–40cm tall and wide, making them suitable for smaller indoor spaces.
