Plant Information

  • Botanical Name: Begonia 'Pink Lady'
  • Common Name: Pink Lady Begonia
  • Family: Begoniaceae
  • Plant Type: Cane Begonia Hybrid
  • Growth Habit: Upright and bushy
  • Difficulty: Easy to Intermediate
  • Pet Safe: No. Begonias are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.

Light Requirements

Begonia 'Pink Lady' thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from a position that receives plenty of natural brightness throughout the day.

Ideal conditions:

  • Bright indirect light
  • East or west-facing windows
  • Filtered light near a south-facing window
  • Supplementary grow lights during winter

Avoid:

  • Intense direct midday sun
  • Deep shade
  • Dark corners

Insufficient light can result in leggy growth and fewer flowers, while excessive direct sun may scorch the leaves.

Watering

This begonia prefers lightly moist compost but does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.

Water when:

  • The top 2–3 cm of compost feels dry
  • The pot feels noticeably lighter

Avoid:

  • Letting the soil remain constantly wet
  • Allowing the plant to sit in standing water
  • Complete drying out for extended periods

Water less frequently during winter when growth naturally slows.

Humidity

Begonia 'Pink Lady' appreciates moderate to high humidity but adapts well to typical indoor environments.

Ideal humidity:

  • 50–70%

For best growth:

  • Group with other houseplants
  • Use a humidifier if indoor air becomes particularly dry
  • Maintain good airflow around the plant

Avoid misting directly onto the leaves, as this can encourage fungal issues.

Temperature

Warm, stable temperatures will keep Begonia 'Pink Lady' growing happily.

Ideal range:

  • 18°C – 26°C

Avoid:

  • Temperatures below 12°C
  • Cold draughts
  • Sudden temperature fluctuations

Consistent warmth promotes stronger growth and more reliable flowering.

Soil and Potting Mix

A light, airy potting mix helps support healthy roots.

Recommended mix:

  • Peat-free houseplant compost
  • Perlite or pumice
  • Fine orchid bark

The growing medium should retain some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Feeding

Regular feeding encourages healthy foliage and abundant blooms.

Recommended:

  • Balanced liquid fertiliser
  • Every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer

Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Growth and Size

Begonia 'Pink Lady' develops into an attractive upright specimen with age.

Mature characteristics:

  • Upright cane-like stems
  • Decorative silver-green foliage
  • Pink flower clusters
  • Bushy growth habit

Typical indoor size:

  • Height: 40–90 cm
  • Spread: 30–60 cm

Regular pruning can help maintain a fuller, more compact shape.

Flowering

One of the highlights of Begonia 'Pink Lady' is its attractive floral display.

Flower characteristics:

  • Soft pink blooms
  • Produced in hanging clusters
  • Typically appear during spring, summer, and autumn under good conditions

Providing bright light and regular feeding will help encourage flowering.

Common Problems

Yellow Leaves

Usually caused by overwatering or poor drainage.

Brown Leaf Edges

Often linked to low humidity or inconsistent watering.

Leggy Growth

Typically the result of insufficient light.

Powdery Mildew

Can occur if airflow is poor and foliage remains damp.

Dropping Leaves

May be caused by sudden changes in temperature or environmental stress.

Pruning and Maintenance

Pruning helps maintain a compact, attractive shape.

To keep the plant looking its best:

  • Remove damaged or yellowing leaves
  • Trim leggy stems
  • Pinch growing tips to encourage branching

Regular grooming promotes denser growth and more flowers.

Propagation

Begonia 'Pink Lady' is easy to propagate.

Methods:

  • Stem cuttings
  • Water propagation
  • Direct rooting in moist compost

Cuttings root readily during spring and summer and quickly establish into new plants.
