Calathea ‘Glaza’ is a beautifully decorative tropical houseplant admired for its elegant patterned foliage and soft, refined colouration. Known for its broad, gently textured leaves, this variety displays a sophisticated blend of green tones with contrasting markings that create a layered, almost painted appearance across the foliage.

Like other plants within the Marantaceae family, Calathea ‘Glaza’ is often referred to as a Prayer Plant due to its natural leaf movements. The foliage subtly raises and lowers throughout the day in response to light levels, adding movement and life to indoor spaces.

Its lush, compact growth habit makes it ideal for shelves, side tables, bedrooms, and bathrooms, particularly in interiors where softer tropical foliage is preferred over bold architectural plants. While Calatheas are known for being slightly more demanding than beginner houseplants, the reward is a highly decorative plant with constantly attractive foliage.

Key Features

  • Decorative patterned foliage with layered green tones
  • Elegant, soft tropical appearance
  • Leaves move throughout the day in response to light
  • Compact and bushy growth habit
  • Excellent choice for humid indoor environments

Detailed Care Guide

Light Requirements

Calathea ‘Glaza’ thrives in medium to bright indirect light.

  • Best placed in filtered or diffused light
  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch and fade the leaves
  • Lower light is tolerated better than harsh direct sun

Ideal placement:

  • North or east-facing windows
  • Bright bathrooms or kitchens
  • Shelves away from intense sunlight

Watering

Consistent moisture is important for healthy Calathea growth.

  • Keep the soil lightly moist but not waterlogged
  • Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry slightly
  • Avoid allowing the soil to fully dry out
  • Reduce watering slightly during winter

Tip: Calatheas can be sensitive to minerals and chemicals in tap water. Filtered, rainwater, or distilled water is often preferred.

Humidity & Temperature

Humidity is one of the most important aspects of Calathea care.

  • Ideal humidity: 60–80%
  • Temperature range: 18–26°C
  • Avoid draughts, radiators, and sudden temperature changes

Low humidity commonly causes crispy edges and leaf curling.

Soil & Potting Mix

A moisture-retentive yet airy soil mix works best.

Recommended mix:

  • 50% houseplant compost
  • 25% coco coir
  • 25% perlite

This helps retain moisture while preventing compaction.

Feeding

Feed during the active growing season to support healthy foliage.

  • Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser every 4 weeks during spring and summer
  • Avoid excessive feeding, which may damage roots
  • Reduce feeding during autumn and winter

Growth Habit

  • Naturally compact and bushy
  • Produces new leaves continuously from the base
  • Ideal for decorative pots and tabletop displays

Mature plants develop fuller foliage and stronger patterning over time.

Repotting

  • Repot every 1–2 years or when rootbound
  • Spring is the best time to repot
  • Use pots with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup

Propagation

Calathea ‘Glaza’ is most commonly propagated by division.

  • Divide healthy clumps during repotting
  • Ensure each section has roots attached
  • Keep warm and humid while recovering

Common Issues

1. Brown leaf edges

  • Usually caused by low humidity or tap water sensitivity

2. Curling leaves

  • Often indicates underwatering or dry air

3. Yellowing leaves

  • Typically linked to overwatering or poor drainage

4. Faded foliage

  • Too much direct sunlight

Styling & Placement Ideas

  • Ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms, and living spaces with softer light
  • Works beautifully in neutral, modern, or botanical interiors
  • Pairs well with ferns, Marantas, and other humidity-loving plants
  • Excellent for creating a lush tropical display without large plants dominating the space
