The Bay Tree (Laurus nobilis) is a timeless evergreen culinary herb tree, celebrated for its glossy, aromatic dark green leaves used fresh or dried in cooking throughout the world. Supplied in a 2 litre nursery pot, this bay tree arrives ready to be enjoyed on a patio, balcony, doorstep, or indoors, and responds beautifully to shaping over time into a neat, ornamental form.

Slow-growing and frost hardy, it brings year-round structure and fragrance to any space — whether displayed as a statement container plant by a front door, as part of a herb garden, or used as a natural screen in a smaller outdoor area. A rewarding and long-lived plant for both beginner and experienced gardeners alike.

Plant Growing Conditions:

  • Suitable as both an outdoor and indoor container plant across the UK

  • Frost hardy — tolerates mild UK winters well when positioned in a sheltered spot

  • Ideal for patios, balconies, front doorsteps, and garden containers

  • Grows well in a wide range of containers including terracotta, glazed, and plastic pots

  • Can be used as a subtle natural privacy screen in smaller outdoor spaces

  • Best placed in a position sheltered from harsh or prolonged cold winds

Cultural Information:

  • Botanical Name: Laurus nobilis

  • Common Names: Bay Laurel, Sweet Bay, Mediterranean Bay Tree

  • Classification: Evergreen Shrub / Tree

  • Fully Grown Height & Spread: Up to 7.5 m × 3 m in open ground; significantly smaller and manageable when grown in containers

  • Growth Habit: Upright, Bushy, Slow-Growing Evergreen

  • Perfect for: Culinary Herb Gardens, Containers, Patios, Entrances, Topiary & Shaped Displays, Indoor Growing

  • Flowering Time: Spring (April–May) — small, pale yellow-green flowers

  • Planting Position: Full Sun to Partial Shade, sheltered from cold and drying winds

  • Attracts: Bees and Beneficial Insects

  • Type: Hardy Evergreen Tree / Shrub

  • Foliage: Dark Green, Glossy, Aromatic Oval Leaves

  • Culinary Use: Leaves used fresh or dried — a staple herb in stocks, stews, soups, and marinades

Care Guidance:

  • Water regularly but allow the compost to partially dry between waterings — overwatering is the most common cause of yellowing leaves

  • Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season (spring through summer) to support healthy, fragrant foliage

  • Prune in late spring or early summer to maintain shape and encourage dense, bushy growth

  • Repot into a larger container when roots begin to outgrow the current pot, using a good quality, free-draining potting mix

  • Monitor for common bay tree pests including bay sucker, scale insects, and aphids

  • In periods of prolonged hard frost, move container-grown plants to a sheltered or frost-free position

What's Included:

  • 1 x Bay Tree (Laurus nobilis) supplied in a 2 litre nursery pot

  • Approximate height at time of dispatch: 60–70 cm (measured including the pot)

Notes: This bay tree is supplied in a standard nursery pot, ready to be potted on into your chosen decorative container or planted into a garden border. The nursery pot is a practical growing vessel and is not intended as a display pot.
