Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. This variation is natural, given that each plant is unique and subject to seasonal growth changes.
At Plants for all Seasons, we recognise the critical role our courier partners play in ensuring the safe and secure delivery of your plants. Cyrtosperma johnstonii is a spectacular, highly architectural aroid renowned for its dramatic, mottled stems, large paddle-shaped leaves, and bold tropical presence. Native to Papua New Guinea and surrounding Pacific islands, this species belongs to the Araceae family and is admired for its primitive, almost prehistoric appearance.
The plant’s most striking feature is its thick, upright petioles, beautifully patterned with maroon, chocolate, and pale mint-green mottling — a camouflage-like pattern that gives the species its signature exotic look. The large, glossy leaves are deep green with pronounced venation, forming a broad, elegant canopy as the plant matures. When grown in warm, humid conditions, Cyrtosperma johnstonii develops a commanding stature, making it an exceptional centrepiece for any rare plant collection.
Distinctive, sculptural, and full of personality, this species is perfect for collectors who appreciate bold tropical foliage plants with unusual markings and impressive size.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate medium light, but growth will slow and petiole colouration may be less vibrant. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the large leaves and damage the patterned stems.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. This species prefers evenly damp conditions, similar to its swampy native habitat, but still requires excellent drainage to avoid root rot. Allow just the top 1–2 cm of soil to dry before watering again.
Temperature: Prefers warm conditions of 22–30 °C. Growth slows noticeably below 18 °C.
Humidity: Needs high humidity (70–90%) for best leaf and stem development. Ideal for greenhouses, plant cabinets, or naturally humid rooms. Supplement with a humidifier if necessary.
Use a rich, moisture-retentive yet aerodynamic mix — such as houseplant compost blended with coco coir, perlite, fine orchid bark, and a touch of sphagnum moss. Repot every 1–2 years into a deeper pot to accommodate its large root system.
Feed every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Slightly higher nitrogen content helps support large foliage growth.
Remove older or yellowing leaves at the base to encourage new growth. Wipe leaves gently to maintain their glossy sheen. Ensure strong support if the plant grows tall, as mature specimens can become top-heavy.
A moderate to fast grower under warm, humid conditions. Mature plants can reach 1–2 metres indoors over time, developing thicker, more intensely mottled petioles and broader leaves. Growth may slow during cooler months.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Crispy leaf edges: Low humidity or underwatering.
Dull petiole colour: Insufficient light.
Pests: Watch for spider mites and thrips on foliage and petiole grooves.
Cyrtosperma johnstonii is a rare and remarkable collector’s aroid, prized for its wild, jungle-like appearance and beautifully patterned stems. Its imposing stature and bold markings add instant drama to plant displays, making it an excellent focal plant in conservatories, humid rooms, or large plant arrangements.
Its unusual petiole patterning sets it apart from more common aroids, making it a favourite among collectors who seek unique and museum-worthy species. When grown well, it becomes a true statement piece.
