Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. This variation is natural, given that each plant is unique and subject to seasonal growth changes.

Hoya ‘Black Dragon’ produces thick, leathery leaves that are broad to slightly elongated, with a firm, almost rigid feel. Juvenile leaves usually emerge green, gradually darkening as they mature, especially when exposed to brighter light. With time, foliage can develop rich undertones of purple, bronze or blackened green, particularly along veins and leaf margins.
The plant has a vigorous vining growth habit, producing sturdy stems that can trail freely or be trained onto a hoop or trellis. When well grown, it forms a strong, architectural plant with evenly spaced foliage and an impressive, sculptural silhouette.
Flowering is possible once the plant is mature and settled. Blooms typically appear in rounded umbels of waxy, star-shaped flowers, often in soft pinks, creams or pale tones that contrast beautifully against the dark foliage. As with all Hoyas, flowers emerge from persistent spurs that should never be removed.
Bright, indirect light is key to both healthy growth and achieving the darkest leaf colouring. An east- or west-facing window is ideal, or a bright spot set back from a south-facing window.
Gentle morning or late-afternoon sun can enhance leaf colour and encourage compact growth. Prolonged harsh midday sun should be avoided, as it can scorch the leaves. In low light, growth will slow and leaves may remain greener, losing much of the dramatic dark coloration.
Hoya ‘Black Dragon’ prefers a soak-and-dry watering routine. Allow the top portion of the growing medium to dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess moisture drain away completely.
During spring and summer, watering will be more regular as the plant actively grows. In autumn and winter, reduce watering and allow the mix to dry further between waterings. The thick leaves store moisture, making the plant tolerant of short dry spells, but prolonged waterlogging can quickly lead to root rot.
Wrinkled or slightly soft leaves usually indicate thirst, while yellowing leaves or soft stems point to overwatering.
This Hoya thrives in warm, stable indoor temperatures, ideally between 18–28°C. It should be protected from cold draughts, sudden temperature drops and unheated rooms. Temperatures below 12–13°C can cause stress and stalled growth.
Moderate humidity is sufficient, but slightly higher humidity encourages stronger growth and better leaf quality. It adapts well to average household humidity, making it less demanding than many tropical foliage plants.
A very free-draining, airy growing medium is essential. A chunky mix containing orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and a small amount of peat-free compost or coco coir works well.
Choose a pot that fits the root ball closely rather than oversizing. Hoya ‘Black Dragon’ prefers to be slightly root-bound and often establishes more quickly when not repotted too frequently. Terracotta pots can be helpful for moisture control.
Feed lightly during the growing season. From spring through late summer, apply a balanced houseplant fertiliser at half strength every four to six weeks. Avoid overfeeding, as this can lead to excessive soft growth at the expense of leaf colour and structure.
Do not feed during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Pruning is minimal. Remove only damaged or excessively long growth during the active growing season. Never remove old flower spurs, as these are reused for future blooms.
Training the vines around a hoop or trellis helps create a balanced, display-worthy plant and prevents stems from becoming tangled.
Flowering usually occurs once the plant is mature and settled. Stability is essential. Avoid moving the plant or changing its environment suddenly when buds begin to form, as this can cause bud drop.
Bright light, consistent watering, warm temperatures and a slightly root-bound pot all increase the likelihood of blooms.
Propagation is straightforward using stem cuttings with at least two nodes. Cuttings can be rooted in water or in a well-draining propagation mix. Warmth, humidity and bright indirect light encourage rooting, typically within a few weeks.
Hoya ‘Black Dragon’ is a dramatic, relatively resilient Hoya that rewards bright light, excellent drainage and patient care. While not difficult, it performs best with consistency and restraint, particularly when it comes to watering. Given time, it becomes a striking, long-lived plant with uniquely dark foliage and beautifully contrasting blooms.
