Hoya tsangii ‘Albomarginata’ is a rare and elegant variegated Hoya prized for its delicate trailing growth and beautifully edged foliage. Unlike thicker-leaved Hoyas such as Hoya compacta, this species produces slender vines covered in small, elongated leaves with creamy-white margins surrounding rich green centres. The “Albomarginata” name refers to this distinctive white variegation around the leaf edges, creating a soft, refined appearance.

Native forms of Hoya tsangii originate from tropical regions of Southeast Asia where they grow epiphytically on trees, receiving bright filtered light, warm temperatures and excellent airflow around their roots. The variegated form adds extra visual interest and rarity, making it highly desirable among Hoya collectors.

As the plant matures, it develops long cascading stems that look particularly impressive spilling from hanging planters or climbing delicate trellises. Mature specimens may also reward growers with clusters of tiny star-shaped flowers that can produce a pleasant sweet fragrance.

Because of the variegation, Hoya tsangii ‘Albomarginata’ tends to grow a little slower than fully green forms, but with stable conditions it becomes a beautiful trailing display plant.

Care Guide

Light ☀️

Bright, indirect light is essential to maintain healthy growth and strong variegation.

Ideal placement:

  • East-facing window
  • Bright room with filtered sunlight
  • South-facing window with a sheer curtain

Gentle morning sunlight can be beneficial and may encourage flowering.

Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch lighter leaf margins.

Too little light can lead to:

  • Fading variegation
  • Leggy vines
  • Smaller leaves
  • Slower growth

Water 💧

Hoya tsangii ‘Albomarginata’ prefers to dry slightly between waterings.

Allow approximately the top 50–70% of the growing medium to dry before watering thoroughly.

General guide:

Spring/Summer: every 7–10 days
Autumn/Winter: every 2–3 weeks

Never allow roots to sit in soggy compost.

Signs of overwatering:

  • Yellow leaves
  • Soft stems
  • Root decline

Signs of underwatering:

  • Slightly wrinkled leaves
  • Dry vines
  • Slower growth

Humidity 🌿

This species appreciates moderate to higher humidity.

Ideal humidity:

50–70%

Higher humidity often encourages:

  • Faster vine growth
  • Healthier aerial roots
  • Better flowering
  • Fuller foliage

Average household humidity is usually acceptable if watering and airflow are well balanced.

Temperature 🌡️

Ideal temperatures:

18–28°C

Avoid temperatures below 12°C.

Protect from:

  • Cold draughts
  • Sudden temperature changes
  • Prolonged cool conditions

Warm, stable environments produce the best growth.

Soil Mix 🪴

As an epiphytic Hoya, it requires a very airy and free-draining medium.

Recommended mix:

  • 40% houseplant compost or coco coir
  • 30% orchid bark
  • 20% perlite or pumice
  • 10% horticultural charcoal

Roots prefer airflow and should never sit in dense compost.

A pot with drainage holes is essential.

Feeding

Feed during spring and summer:

  • Every 3–4 weeks
  • Balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength

Reduce feeding significantly during winter.

Repotting

Hoya tsangii ‘Albomarginata’ prefers being slightly root-bound.

Repot:

  • Every 2–3 years
  • If roots heavily fill the pot
  • If the mix begins compacting

Increase pot size gradually.

Flowering Tips 🌸

To encourage flowering:

✔ Bright indirect light
✔ Consistent care
✔ Slightly root-bound conditions
✔ Warm temperatures
✔ Stable environment

Most importantly:

Do not remove flower spurs (peduncles). Hoyas repeatedly flower from the same points.

Propagation 🌱

Stem cuttings root quite easily.

Successful cuttings should include:

✔ At least one node
✔ Several leaves
✔ Optional aerial roots

Can root in:

  • Water
  • Sphagnum moss
  • Perlite
  • Propagation boxes

Warmth speeds up rooting significantly.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves

  • Usually overwatering

Brown crispy edges

  • Low humidity or underwatering

Weak variegation

  • Insufficient light

Mealybugs

  • Common around leaf joints and stems

Slow growth

  • Natural with variegated forms
