Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. This variation is natural, given that each plant is unique and subject to seasonal growth changes.

Cyrtosperma johnstonii is an extraordinary tropical aroid prized for its dramatic, prehistoric appearance and bold, patterned stems. Native to the lowland rainforests and swampy wetlands of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, this rare species stands out with its huge, arrow-shaped leaves and distinctive, mottled petioles — making it one of the most sculptural aroids in cultivation.
The foliage is a deep, glossy green with prominent veining and subtle red to maroon undersides. The thick petioles are covered in dark maroon, brown, or burgundy blotches on a lighter base, creating an exotic, reptilian effect. As it matures, Cyrtosperma johnstonii develops a commanding form, with upright, paddle-like leaves that can reach over 1.5 metres in height, radiating from a robust base.
Architectural, rare, and deeply tropical, Cyrtosperma johnstonii is a collector’s showpiece — a living reminder of the lush, primeval jungles it hails from.
Prefers bright, indirect light or gentle dappled shade. Too much direct sun can scorch the large leaves, while low light will slow growth and cause the vibrant colours of the petioles to fade. Outdoors, it thrives in partial shade with protection from harsh midday sun.
Keep the soil consistently moist at all times. This species naturally grows in marshy environments, so it appreciates slightly wetter conditions than most aroids. Water generously whenever the top layer of soil begins to dry out. However, ensure excellent drainage to prevent stagnant water around the roots. Do not allow the soil to dry out completely.
Temperature: Thrives in warmth between 22–30°C; avoid exposure below 18°C.
Humidity: Requires very high humidity (70–90%) to thrive. Use a humidifier, mist regularly, or place near other tropical plants to maintain moisture levels. Ideal for greenhouse or conservatory environments.
Use a moisture-retentive yet well-aerated mix — equal parts compost, orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss work well. The roots prefer a loose, organic substrate that stays damp but breathable. Repot every 1–2 years in spring, increasing pot size as the plant matures.
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser or one designed for aroids. Dilute the fertiliser to half strength to avoid root burn. Suspend feeding during the cooler months when growth naturally slows.
Remove older or damaged leaves close to the base to maintain a clean and attractive form. Wipe the leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and keep them glossy. Rotate occasionally for even growth and balanced exposure to light.
A moderate to fast grower under ideal tropical conditions, Cyrtosperma johnstonii can reach up to 1.5–2 metres tall indoors or in a greenhouse. Its large, arrow-shaped leaves emerge regularly throughout the growing season, supported by thick, patterned petioles. Over time, it becomes a spectacular focal point for large spaces or tropical displays.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering combined with poor drainage.
Brown edges: Low humidity or irregular watering.
Slow growth: Insufficient warmth or light.
Pests: Occasionally spider mites or aphids; treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
*Cyrtosperma johnstonii* belongs to the Araceae family, the same group as Alocasia, Colocasia, and Anthurium. It is native to tropical wetlands of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, including Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, where it grows along rivers and swamp edges.
In the wild, it can reach monumental proportions, forming clumps several metres high. The species’ exotic, patterned stems and massive foliage have made it a favourite among collectors of unusual tropical aroids. Despite its dramatic appearance, it is relatively adaptable in cultivation if given consistent moisture, warmth, and humidity.
Beyond its ornamental value, Cyrtosperma johnstonii adds a powerful sculptural quality to interior landscapes, greenhouses, or shaded tropical gardens — evoking the grandeur of the rainforest.

Its bold, prehistoric look pairs beautifully with large-leaved companions such as Alocasia ‘Platinum’, Anthurium luxurians, or Philodendron spiritus-sancti.
