Alocasia suhirmaniana ‘Purple’ is a rare and exotic member of the Araceae family, highly sought after for its dramatic foliage and regal colouring. Native to the humid rainforests of Southeast Asia, Alocasia suhirmaniana is a species prized for its elegant, elongated arrow-shaped leaves – and the purple cultivar elevates this further with deep, jewel-toned undersides.
The plant produces bold, upright leaves with glossy green upper surfaces highlighted by strong venation. The reverse of each leaf is flushed with a rich purple-burgundy, which becomes particularly striking when light passes through the foliage or when viewed from below. Its upright, architectural growth habit makes it a natural statement piece in tropical plant collections.
Indoors, Alocasia suhirmaniana ‘Purple’ typically reaches 60–90 cm tall, creating a lush, exotic display. Its combination of striking green and purple leaves gives it a sophisticated, dramatic look.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which may scorch the foliage, but ensure enough light to maintain strong growth and vibrant colouring.
Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, watering when the top 2–3 cm feels dry. Reduce watering in winter, when growth naturally slows. Ensure pots drain freely to prevent root rot.
Temperature: Prefers 18–28°C. Protect from draughts and avoid exposure below 15°C.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–80%). Use a humidifier, mist regularly, or stand the pot on a pebble tray.
Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix: peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir is ideal. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the mix and provide room for growth.
Feed every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.
Remove old, yellowing, or damaged leaves at the base. Wipe foliage with a damp cloth to keep the large leaf blades free of dust and glossy.
A moderate grower indoors, reaching 60–90 cm tall. Like many Alocasias, it may enter dormancy in cooler months, with leaves dying back – this is normal. Reduce watering during dormancy and resume normal care when new growth appears in spring.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown tips: Low humidity.
Drooping foliage: Often caused by low light or inconsistent watering.
Pests: Can be susceptible to spider mites, thrips, or mealybugs.
The Alocasia suhirmaniana is a relatively uncommon species in cultivation, making the purple-backed form especially desirable for collectors. Its elegant upright habit, combined with the contrast of green tops and purple undersides, gives it a regal presence – perfect for tropical plant displays.
